LINER NOTES: * Hermit of Whitewater Lake: Wendell Beckwith was a reclusive American inventor who built himself three cabins on Best Island, Whitewater Lake, including the round, log "snail" cabin. He moved there in 1969 where he died in 1980, while working on various studies of gravity, astronomy and human migration. Beckwith seemed to always have been in a fight with someone. He fought with Canadian immigration authorities over his legal status and with Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources over his squatting. In his last years, Outward Bound staff at the base camp on Black Sturgeon Lake befriended him and canoe trips would bring him food and supplies after he became ill. CONTRIBUTORS: Joe Malcoun |
