Steamers on Lake Temagami First steamer S.S. Marie |
During her first year in Temagami, there were probably only two docks where the Marie could moor: her home berth at O'Connor's store adjoining the Caribou Lake portage, and the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) post at Bear Island. The rest of the time she would pull to shore, or as close as possible and canoes would paddle out to her. But that changed quickly with the construction of lodges, camps and cottages. At left is a rare close-up of the wood-burning, 33.5-foot Marie, docked at Keewaydin Camp with the Union Jack flying, c. 1905. KEEWAYDIN ARCHIVE |

The 3.74-ton Marie being hauled to Temagami by 16 horses over ice and snow from the CPR terminus at Cooper's Landing at the south end of Lake Timiskaming. The portages had to be widened to make room for her. She was named for owner Dan O'Connor's wife. The Marie left the lake sometime around 1911. |
The Marie was towing these canoes to Keewaydin Camp, about 1908, past Long and Snake islands in the North Arm. The photo in the ad for White canoes was also used in Grand Trunk Railway ads and postcards promoting Temagami. Some postcards misidentified the location as "near Keewaydin." KEEWAYDIN ARCHIVE |
