Travel on this route, west of Cedar, reflects conditions one might have encountered before non-natives came to the area. The portages follow original nastawgan trails. It is not a particularly well known route and is not maintained by MNR's backcountry rangers, based in Temagami village. Keewaydin and Wabun, youth camps on Lake Temagami, have kept the trails open since at least WWII when fire ranging declined. For the camps, it was a crossover to the Wanapitei River on three-week trips from Lake Temagami. Because the trails do not get more than one or two trips each year, they are less broken in than typical Temagami portages. The map was produced with the cooperation of the guides of Keewaydin. |
