Photo: illegal dock on Woods Lake in Sturgeon River Waterway Park, 2010

November 19, 2010 Who owns our parks? Though protected by law, individuals continue to treat them as personal fiefdoms.  This dock was illegally constructed on Woods Lake in Sturgeon River Provincial Park at the end of an abandoned winter logging right-of-way (shown by arrow).

A boat launched here would be able to motor into neighbouring Scarecrow Lake inside Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Wilderness Park.

The photo was taken in August after work had been done on the road, work that made it traversable by vehicles.  A new dock was built to replace an older one, also illegal, now washed up on shore (left). A motorboat was cached on the road.

FOT meetings always interesting

Conservation groups tend to have, well, boring meetings. Not Friends of Temagami (FOT).

Speakers at last weekend's AGM spoke about traditional aboriginal culture (Craig Macdonald), pictographs (Bill Buchan), declining forestry standards in the area (Bob Olajos), and FOT's ongoing map project (Alex Broadbent).

TFN members voting on self-determined membership

Who is a member of the Temagami First Nation? Today, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada decides. TFN members will vote on the return of that right.

The federal department exercises the power under the Indian Act. It has done so for 100 years. The statute gives First Nations the power if their membership approves.

The TFN sent out notice to its members of information sessions and the upcoming vote.
