DECEMBER 18, 2017 Freeze-up: December 17! The last open water on Lake Temagami, seen December 16, is closed. Lake Temagami is our benchmark so freeze-up is called on December 17. The other open waters are typical holdouts: Wanapitei, lower Timiskaming and Ottawa River. Compare to December 18 last year. Have a look back to previous freeze-up dates.
DECEMBER 16, 2017 Freeze-up Watch: one opening in the ice A great image today caught by using false colour to highlight the open water on Lake Temagami, our benchmark for calling freeze-up. The arrow indicates a common late, freeze-up site, just west of Alexander Island. No other open water is visible on this mid-day image. The other open lakes are typical late holdouts: Wanapitei, Timiskaming and Kipawa lakes, and Ottawa River. Compare to December 18 last year.
DECEMBER 14, 2017 Freeze-up Watch: small lakes frozen The clouds have cleared for the first time in two weeks and we have a picture of progress. Only the big and deep lakes have open water. "The early freeze-up caught most local residents by surprise, including me this year, given the mild weather through most of October," Bob Farr of Bear Island emailed. What's next? "The north wind just keeps blowing, keeping the large, open areas from freezing. We have had ice since Sunday from Graveyard Point on Bear Island to the Mine Landing. We received a dump of about 10-15 centimeters of snow on Monday. With temps in the -20's and windchills in the -30's, the lake will freeze over once it calms down a bit, I think. "No calm days in the forecast though."
