Feat of strength This circa 1910 photo was not staged. The canoe was carried this way across the portage out of Lake Temagami, possibly by Alfred Horr. This was a Newcomb family and friends day trip. Robert Newcomb of Cleveland was one of the first earliest island owners on Lake Temagami. Horr, the Newcombs and other Cleveland friends were hardy outdoorsmen who travelled extensively around the area by canoe. The Newcombs built the still-standing, remote cabins on Chambers Lake, Turtleshell Lake and Cabin Falls. Horr built the cabin on Hansen Lake near Chambers. The photo may have been taken by Robert Newcomb who became the first president of the Temagami Lakes Association. Photo from the Newcomb Collection of Temagami Lakes Association archive. |
