JULY 2005

Photographer: Jack Goodman

Common loon

Jack Goodman got a little too close while shooting and the loon demonstrated its "alarm" behaviour to distract him, while about a dozen other loons submerged, and avoided the situation by swimming several hundred yards in the opposite direction.

The multi-layered texture of feathers under the wing are clearly visible.  These provide great warmth and waterproofing when the loon dives to depths as great as 200 feet."

"If you would like to observe loons closely," Goodman suggests, "it is recommended that you find a family swimming.  Then sit very still in your canoe or small skiff.  If you are patient there is a good chance the loons will swim over to investigate you. They are very curious."
