Break-up Watch 2014 - May 13

The big winds forecast for today, and likely would have taken out the ice, did not materialize. Intrepid ice hunters Harold Keevil and Gail Spencer were stopped at Rabbitnose Island (below, left mid-ground) in the North Arm by the ice.

Bob Farr reports the South Arm is ice-free (the traditional last holdouts are south of Cattle Island and the North Arm to Ferguson Bay), so the ice to watch is the North Arm. Break-up is close.

Water-level view of last ice on Lake Temagami

"We got around some ice at Rabbitnose, but it was shore to shore, funnelling towards Seal Rock narrows. We drifted out with it for awhile—very magical, with the sounds. It's moving north with a light southeast wind." — Harold Keevil
