The clouds have cleared for the first time in two weeks and we have a picture of progress. Only the big and deep lakes have open water as marked by arrows. "The early freeze-up caught most local residents by surprise, including me this year, given the mild weather through most of October," Bob Farr of Bear Island emailed. What's next? "The north wind just keeps blowing, keeping the large, open areas from freezing. We have had ice since Sunday from Graveyard Point on Bear Island to the Mine Landing. We received a dump of about 10-15 centimeters of snow on Monday. With temps in the -20's and windchills in the -30's, the lake will freeze over once it calms down a bit, I think." "No calm days in the forecast though."
