The Backdoor route extends the popular short loop of the Sturgeon River
— from Matagamasi Lake up to Stouffer Lake and onto the river — to
Kettle Falls. This adds a day and a half to the loop and puts you in the
craggy heart of the river. And it is
worth it.

The Backdoor is not on the
Nastawgan map because, as its author readily admits, it was
impossible to learn all the ancient trails when so many with the
knowledge were deceased. Yet I am not suggesting it is an old nastawgan.
We don't know. The last-known travellers, from Wabun Camp on Lake
Temagami, did it in 1994 before it was re-cleared in 2009. Before that
we know trapper Buck Olivier used it in the 1980s
