Stouffer Lake Rock Art This is a previously unrecorded pictograph site on the east side of Stouffer Lake, near the Sturgeon River. Above is the largest of two clusters showing the most obvious shapes. There is a remarkable similarity to the well-known Matagamasi Lake pictograph site as both show the manitou/shaman and a small animal. The human-like figure here is about a half-foot in height, smaller than on Matagamasi. The Matagamasi site is the second largest in Temagami. This could be the third largest. Below is the most visible pictograph in the northern cluster. It is unclear what it depicts.
They are probably unknown because they are so heavily faded. I almost missed them myself when paddling past in 2009. So, the photos were enhanced in PhotoShop to bring out the red ochre with which they were painted. — Brian Back
