Was on Beautiful Solace Lake last week and noticed this campsite. It looks official, what with it being marked with an orange diamond campsite marker. Not sure if it's really new or more likely merely un-mapped.

It's not new and it's not the only site in Solace park that is missed on ottertooth. I don't know the reason, but I'm sure there is one or two. |

I did not put it on because it was opposite what was a heavily used cabin. (The owner is now deceased and it should have reverted to Parks. But as these things go, it hasn't happened, though I understand the cabin is getting little use.) Should I mark it? Is it still a large site? What other sites have we missed?

Brian, besides the site discussed above I thought I'd seen 2 more "secret" sites in Solace, but I can find only 1 mentioned in my fragmentary notes: Rodd lake, on a point in the south-western corner of the lake, across from 300P. It's marked with "official" sign. |

I have visited some of these sites marked "official" that for the life of me I can't see how they could possibly be campsites. In some cases, there were actual good ones nearby that weren't marked "official." So I don't mark on Ottertooth maps anything just because it has been orange'd on the ground. It needs inspection and a count of tentsites. There are also many lunch places that do not have tentsites. The fireplaces can be seen from the water that can make them appear to be campsites. |

I only looked at the site i photographed on Solace from the seat of a canoe, so sadly, i don't know how many tents, if any, can be accommodated. It certainly does have a 'great' view of the cabin. What jumped out at me was the larger (at least 2m x 1m) new looking solar panel. |

I did not take a photo, but i saw an orange diamond on a tree as we paddled from the campsite on Pilgrim toward the portage into Maggie. Can not recall the exact location, but looked to be on a small point. Attached map shows general location. No idea if there are tent sites there or not.

I can confirm that we also saw the same site across from the cabin on Solace this week but did not stop to inspect it. We did however find another site on Selkirk. Site was not flagged, but was used this year, has 2 tent pads (one in bushes, one closer to rocky shore on moss), good water access and a great view. Was left a nice stack of kindling and returned the favour. Purple X marks the spot.

Thanks, I will post that one. What kind of shape are the portages between Solace and the Sturgeon? |

mconn99: If this was the stack of kindling at the Selkirk site, glad you appreciated it. I thought that were other potential tent pads a little further back in the bush. It is really a great little site. We removed some garbage from the fireplace and burnt the 1/2 burnt branches that were lying around. Hopefully site was still in good shape when you got there. |

Brian: The 1275 portage to Twin Falls had s short stretch that was quite muckified/oozified by some recent beaver activity. Think it was in the last 1/3 of the portage - just after the stream crossing. We haphazardly threw down a bunch of branches (Sep 03) While it helped us a bit, they've likely sunk into the muck by now. My guess is that muckified/oozified stretch was about 30-50m long ???
