Update: Month 7, Week 31, with another full moon with a partial lunar eclipse the next night Venus crossed the sun when viewed from Earth in a rare planetary alignment, not to occur again until 2117. Oh, and lots of rain, thunderstorms, even some hail, but fires appear to be under control now. We had a few milestones this week with Adam's 31st Birthday on Tuesday and Daniel's 29th Birthday today. Thanks for all the birthday wishes and continued thoughts and prayers.

Quiet on the search front this week, but spoke with Mike this afternoon and hopefully divers will be going in tomorrow to search the north end of Diamond Lake, including use of side scan imaging. Also, Graham from MNR confirmed Liskeard Lumber Rd and Horten's Gate/Rd and Beauty Lk Rd areas have been checked. Portage maintenance is underway and all eyes will be wide open for signs of Daniel. Thanks Graham for your continued search efforts.

Daniel is blessed to have someone as artistic as Don Wright who make a special Happy Birthday doodle for him. Don is the first person I contacted when our search for Daniel began back in November. He has been a tremendous support since, we hope to meet him and his wife next time we are up north, which may be soon!

In addition to our Love, Best Wishes and fun celebration with Adam yesterday, we lite a candle for Daniel tonight and wished: "May the sun shine upon you, may the moon light your way, may you find happiness and adventure, each and every day. Our wishes for you are that you are safe, healthy and happy whereever you are." Thanks to Michelle for the wonderful cake that reflected Daniel's love of nature and native spirituality so creatively.

Update on Water Search: Wanted to let you know the OPP have conducted a water search this past Friday using side scan imaging, negative. They planned to go in Sat./Sun. with divers to check out some areas where the boat couldn't get to, awaiting an update from them.

The family has updated the missing-person flyer:

Keep a watch in the Diamond Lake area, and let everyone that you pass know too.

Just trying to help. If Daniel was a fisherman, Liberity lake Off Red Squaral Road had an open season for Aurora Trout last year. This lake is only open one year every three years. 2011 was the one year. Could it be possible he could of headed to Liberity lake? All my best wishes in the search.

Hello friends, I was just wondering if there were any pictures of Daniels car posted? With many car guys in the area maybe someone would recognize it and may have talked to Daniel? Or maybe it had a bumper sticker that might have stuck in ones mind? Its a long shot but who knows...

Since the Diamond Lake area is on the radar following the finding of Daniel’s clothing, I thought I would throw this out there. Maureen, earlier in the thread I believe you said the OPP would search the ground within 800 meters of the clothing location. Without knowing how much detail they share with you I am left wondering if that distance is a radius in an “entire” circle, or if the OPP would have stayed “only” on the eastern shore of Diamond’s north arm where the clothes were found. What I am getting at is the thought of a search above and behind the pictographs on the western shore which would still be well within the 800 meters. Was this area searched too? If Daniel wanted to remain incognito in the area, he may have chosen to stay/camp close to but yet a little removed from this sacred site. The maps show a small body of water not far behind the pictograph location, though probably not potable water as it could well be a beaver pond. There is a stream from this pond out to Diamond very near the pictographs. My wife and I recall hearing the stream when we were last at the site in 2009. As always, just a thought, one among many but I’m sure not nearly as many as the ones you and your family must have…

Another one though…but this one less logistic and more wholistic. I have been meaning to comment on an earlier observation I made in your posts. Or perhaps it was just more of a “sense” but confirmed with your recent post and pictures about Daniel’s birthday and it relates to the apparent presence of Native spirituality in Daniel’s life. I am not sure of the degree to which Daniel had become influenced by Native teachings and culture but it brings to mind earlier times when “settler” individuals would all but abandon their own European ancestry in favour of those belonging to the First Nations. Such an occurrence was almost never accepted by the dominant culture and such individuals would be derided and dismissed as having “gone Native” or “turned injun.” You (and presumably your family), however, have shown no such disenchantment with Native culture and this is very heartening, indeed. One could easily see or understand how you could well have had very different feelings about the culture and ways that have so obviously played a role in Daniel’s journey to the Temagami wilderness, and his subsequent disappearance. Your acceptance and respect for Daniel’s beliefs moves me on account of the simple fact that I myself am Aboriginal. My wife and I are all about cross-cultural understanding and acceptance. Neither one of us suffers “cultural gate-keepers” lightly….those who would decide whom to exclude or include in any given culture. All are welcome, Daniel among them. All this to say that Native ways, beliefs and spirituality figure prominently in our lives too and so we both say to you “miigwetch” for your understanding and acceptance of the same in your son’s life.

Tomorrow (Friday), she and I will head up to the Red Squirrel Road and paddle our way up to Anima-Nipissing Lake to look for the pictographs at the south end of the lake. Find them or not, we will certainly keep a keen eye out on the way… and when we get there Maureen, for that sacred place, for Daniel, for you and yours, we will be putting some tobacco down on the water. Peace!

Update: Week 32, the OPP have concluded their water search with the divers, negative. We hope to get more info tomorrow and then plan next steps in our search to find Daniel. "Thanks" Brian for posting the updated flyer and for giving the heads up to "Paddle with Purpose" - awareness is key.

Although we are focused on the Diamond/Lady Evelyn area, don't rule out the fact that he may have gotten further than we think, Daniel would not give up easily, he is extremely resourceful. We realize that he very well could have been experiencing hypothermia, having shed his winter clothing (paradoxical undressing). Based on the weathering of the clothing found, it was likely there since the fall. Now we need to find him too.

walleyehunter: Daniel loved to fish, ever since he was little. Even though he did not take his tackle with him, he is resourceful enough to find a way to fish. We don't recall Daniel mentioning Liberty Lake. We will check with the friends he made in the summer if this lake was an area he went to or was interested in.

temagamifriends: I've attached a picture here, his car is a 4 door Chevy Impala, 2000, with a canoe rack on top, but no canoe. We believe Daniel had gone that same day to the parking spot at Camp Wanapitei. His car has no stickers or markings and is now back home. Based on the investigation, the only people who spoke with Daniel was the grocery clerk where he bought some fruit and vegetables and the PetroCan when he asked for a map of the interior, which they didn't have. As Ed shared, we learned of the vehicle being spotted there a little over a week after he left Waterloo.

maramar: Your thought on checking the west side, including the stream, is a good one, we appreciate all ideas and suggestions. We'll be discussing further with the OPP, what to check next. Daniel would definitely want to be near open water. I believe someone said the water does not freeze at the liftover to Lady Evelyn. Daniel has always had a strong relationship with nature and native culture; we went to summer pow wows in his younger years and he definitely has an appreciation and connection. He felt safe in Temagami and respected the beliefs and the land. We understand that this is his journey. I may be repeating myself, but as parents, we will do whatever is in our power to find our son. Any and all ideas to help our search are deeply appreciated. Many "Thanks" to you too. Enjoy your paddle and the beauty of the spring season, which is so quickly moving into summer.

Update: Week 34 packing is underway for husband Don and son Adam to go up on Mon. July 2nd to resume our search for Daniel. They will be extending the search area covered by the OPP and will also be searching the NW (pictograph) side of Diamond Lake including the stream area suggested earlier by maramar. OPP have not checked the west side. If anything is found, they will reconsidee further searching on their part. We appreciate the ongoing help from all.

I will be sure to update if I hear anything. Once again, anyone else in this area, please remain on the lookout.

Reminder to "Paddle with Purpose".

Summer Search Day 1: Don and Adam left for Temagami this morning, with packs protected incase of a tip. Thanks to Camp Wanapitei for your assistance again and to Alf for loaning your packs and sharing your backcountry expertice, just hope they remember everything you taught them! Oh yes, Don did remember to make sure Adam's pack is heavier than his as per instructions.

Just got a call, all is well, even though they did not get all the way to Diamond Lake. They will be camping tonight at Shark Rock Inlet which is as far as they got. Once tents are up, they may even get to take a fishing break.

moose: Thanks for your report, bear sightings are a little troubling, but guys are prepared thanks to their experience at Camp Wanapitei in the spring, see Bear Temagami. Also, pictograph side is definitely one of the focal areas to be searched. They said weather is great so far and winds are OK.

Summer Search Day 2: Guys had an early start today, now all setup at the same campsite that the canoe group who found Daniel's winter clothing stayed at the night before they headed back to Camp Wanapitei.

They spent time today searching the shoreline, no signs. It rained most of the day (5 hrs). Met some youth canoe groups going into Evelyn and others heading back out of Diamond Lake. Bears are present, so tree storage is in play, air horns are in hand. I hope they get some sleep tonight.

Tomorrow they will be going to the pictograph side to check out the little lake and surrounding ground area.

Summer Search Day 3: Guys had a good night, bear didn't bother them, it is about 100yds away, not in their campsite. They searched the small lake, stream and swampy area around the lake, no signs of Daniel. Apparently the mosquitos aren't too bad, not like the biting (horse) flies. No rain today, so they were in the bush mostly, did some fishing when they could, when they needed a break. They saw more planes than canoes today.

Tomorrow they plan to check the shoreline on the west side and down the lake, check the cliff above the pictographs, and a rockface straight across from their campsite. Be safe!

Update: Month 8, Week 35, Summer Search Day 4 and 1st Online Candlelight Vigil for the Missing and their families, busy day. There was also a full moon this week to brighten things up.

The vigil was 2-part for us. Part 1 was Don and Adam lighting their candles and saying a prayer for Daniel at 9pm and headed directly to bed, it was a hot, long day of searching. Part 2 was me and a small group of family members lighting candles and sharing prayers at 11pm, except we were gathered here in Waterloo and not going directly to bed. After everyone left, I remained outside watching the stars and enjoying the candles and thoughts of Daniel until the last tealight burned out at 1:45am. It is heartwarming to know so many people shared in this event for all our missing loved ones. "Thanks" to Loved & Missing in Canada for initiating this event.

Searching was intense, went about 1km in the bush, but negative. Tomorrow they will likely search the far end of Diamond shoreline around Lady Evelyn entry. They did mention the bears are not the issue right now, last night it was the "mice".

We were in Lady Evelyn from June 23-28. Made a point of visiting camp sites around the furthest south part of the western basin. Nothing to report. Will be in next weekend for a week. Will keep an eye out and advise other visitors.
God Bless.

Summer Search Day 5: Another hot day of searching. Guys finished checking the top end up to Lady Evelyn Lake, still no signs. Very puzzling, my mind is confused, my heart aches. How can Daniel's winter clothing be there, but no sign of him? Where do we go from here?

The water helped cool Don and Adam throughout the day, with some intermittent fishing opportunities, with a large pike caught be Adam today. Catch and release, since food needs to be consumed before pack up and return home tomorrow. Enjoy your last night, and remember to be safe!

walleyehunter: Thanks for your trip update and keeping an eye out for Daniel.

Summer Search Day 6: This was actually a travel day home, starting at 6:30am and arriving home, tired but safe and sound by 10pm. Other than sore feet with some blisters, scraps on the legs, healing from one tick removal, they are OK. It's good to have them both back home, and we'll regroup to determine what to do next.

We ask for those in the area to continue to be on the lookout for signs of Daniel, and say a prayer over your campfire too, would be appreciated.

Oh, and if anyone finds a BB cell phone on the pictograph side, that would be Adam's with some great pics on it!

If you try calling Adam's lost device (presuming it was ON when lost) from a satellite phone while walking in that area (sooner than batter will give up) you may hear it..

Summer Search, Part 2: Well, Don and Ken are packing up for Temagami to continue our summer search for Daniel. Ken, a very close friend of the family, was with Don when the initial search was done in the fall by the OPP where Daniel's car was found, in the parking lot for Camp Wanapetei off Red Squirrel Rd.

They will be heading out early tomorrow morning, again to Diamond Lake where Daniel's winter clothing were found. With assistance from Camp Wanapatei and the MNR, they should be setup on Diamond before suppertime.

ronin: Adam's phone was turned off, likely fell out of his pocket while climbing the elevations around the pictograph side, down a fissure, or the stream area there. Luckily he was able to recover his SIM card info from his computer, and is now the happy owner of a new BB. Now, both our son's have lost their BB to Temagami, Daniel in his trip last summer! At least they had the SAT phone to call home!

Here are some pictures from last week's summer search (on Don's camera, always good to have a backup).

Does anyone know about the silver cross at this campsite, marked with "Stubby"?

Summer Search Part 2, Day 1: Don and Ken have arrived safe and sound, camp setup, supper done and dishes about to be done, just need to hang the food bags. Thanks again to Camp Wanapetei and MNR for your assistance today, they would not have made it to the campsite prior to dusk without your help.

After a good night's sleep they will be well rested for a day of searching tomorrow. They plan to focus on ground search, trying to retrace where Daniel might have been. Rest well, be safe!
