Update Week 36, Summer Search Part 2, Day 2: The guys spent most of day checking shoreline and water again, along the NE arm of Diamond, along the pictographs on the west side and along where Daniel's clothing was found on the east side. Tomorrow, Don and Ken plan to cover some ground, area beyond where the OPP checked. I talked with Mike, the OPP search coordinator today, clarifying that they:did search into Lady Evelyn, beyond the island there. Their search area is marked with coloured flags/ties. They did not ground search the west side. We are trying to figure out if Daniel was headed north, or heading back to Camp Wanapitei, either is a possibility. We just need to find something more to give us a clue, another piece to this puzzle. As mentioned before, if something more is found, the OPP will be notified and consider further search options. We appreciate all the help by everyone. At this point, Daniel likely was not on the beaten path that others would follow. So far a small sprinkle today, but no fire ban there. I'm told the bugs are not as bad as they were last week.. Once again, rest well, and be safe guys! |

Summer Search Part 2, Day 3: I got a call just before noon today from Don, the SAT phone is not working so I will not have daily updates. He called me on a phone from the Diamond Lake Fly In outpost cabin, thanks to Wishin' you were Fishin' for being there. I also learned they have a fly in cabin on Mosquito Lake which can be checked, since it's within our search area for Daniel. So, not much more to say here about the search, but I do have some other items to cover (overdue):
- Music 4 The Missing held their 3rd awareness event on June 16th at Kitchener City Hall Courtyard. 12 musicians in 12 hours! We had great representation locally from family and friends and even a group from the North Bay area (Terry Aho and family, Robbie missing since Oct. 2009). "Thanks" to Linda and Michael Smith (Tasha missing since Dec. 2010) for this terrific event. It was a great day to build strength with each other and get the message out about our missing loved ones.
-
We appreciate all the help from Friends of Temagami who handed out flyers and shared information about Daniel at two events in June, see The search for Daniel Trask continues on the FOT website. I heard today that a fire ban was issued in the north this AM, so no campfires. The guys will need to rely on the "Dragonfly" stove. Once again to Don and Ken, be safe guys! |

Summer Search Part 2, Day 4-6: Guys had thunder boomers the last 2 days, more on it's way today, so they packed up and returned home last night. During this time they searched several "boggy" areas, and bush area, including what is known as "Beaver Pond" (thanks to Malcolm and Rick for your info about this). Don and Ken arrived home safe, but it's disheartened that they found nothing, no further signs of Daniel. This puzzle just keeps getting more difficult. With summertime in full swing, the trees and grounds have filled in, making it much more challenging to search at this time. So, thanks once again to Camp Wanapitei (Woody, Jeff and Erin), Wishin' you were Fishin' (Rick), and the MNR (Graham and Jim) for your help; our summer search could not have gone as smoothly as it did without your assistance. Time to regroup, rethink. Here's a few pics from their search: Daniel's out there somewhere!
Hanging food in tree Cooking the food and yes, some time for fishing too.

Update Week 37: The 2nd week of searching resulted in no further signs of Daniel. Although the target search area is much smaller, this area is still quite large with beautiful, but treacherous terrain. Not knowing which direction Daniel was headed in - north through Lady Evelyn, or south to get back to Red Squirel Rd and Camp Wanapitei, or fallen in the water or on cliffs, or in some other direction. Without any further clues, it's again an overwhelming proposition to search for him. I was planning on going up next with Don, but this is not practical at this point. So, we will need to think "outside of the box", talk with the experts and see what we can come up with. I will be posting a map here showing where Daniel's winter clothing items were found. Please continue to look for signs of Daniel if you are paddeling or trekking in and around this area, If anyone has any ideas to help our search efforts, please do share!

Here's the map showing where Daniel's winter clothing items were found on May 20, 2012 (NE side of Diamond Lake, across from the pictographs, just south of Lady Evelyn Lake in the Temagami backcountry). Once again Paddle with Purpose: If you are in this area please be aware and on the lookout. Any sightings, information or leads can be given directly to the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or email us at find.dan@rogers.com

We were in Lady Evelyn from July 18 - 24th. We made a point of visiting every camp site on Haps map on the south end of the western basin. We even checked some camp sites that were not on the map. Nothing to report. We went as far south as you could go in a motorboat. There were NO postings up at Mowats Landing or the dam about missing persons. A lot of people pass through there and they should have the missing person notices there. In the narrows between Diamond and LE we spoke to a group whos leaders knew nothing of a missing person (these were people who just canoed through where the clothes were found). On the weekend (July 14 and 15) there was a lot of helicopter activity near the south end. Will be back in August 12 - 18. Will continue to search. God Bless |

Update: Week 38: We are planning to meet in person with the OPP Coordinator as soon as he is settled in, just back from vacation. walleyehunter: Appreciate your update and help in spreading the word. I've contacted the folks at Mowats Landing to ensure Daniel's flyer is posted and available. We left a supply of flyers back in May, but they likely have run out. What dam? When Don was up there searching, they covered the liftover area extensively, which was also checked by the OPP. Other than a sleeping bag found close by (see map above, not confirmed to be Daniel's), there were no other signs. We have contacted all the youth camps and outfitters up there we know of, do you know where the group was from? We need to let them know, obviously they were missed in our distribution. Not sure what the helicopter activity was about, we have not heard of any searching by OPP beyond their search where Daniel's winter clothing was found, concluded mid June. As a reminder: What to look for: - Grey/White Atlas aluminum Snowshoes, Size 9 - White zip Hoodie, Grey sweat pants - Orange T-shirt as shown in picture - Black T-shirt with Indian/Wolf on front - Black Backpack, Black/Limegreen Gloves - Creative rock structures, stone or wood carvings, wood chopping, oddities or items out of place. If you spot anything, do not disturb or move it: - Take a picture and note its GPS coordinates - Immediately, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 I'm attaching Daniel's updated flyer (jpg). If anyone wants to print some for distribution, I can send you a pdf, or get it posted here, appreciate your help. Together, we can do this!

trasker, the dam walleyehunter is referring to is the mattawapika dam across from mowat landing which you hve to portage around to get to the lady evelyn & eventually down to diamond if you are going that route. it would be a good place to put posters as everyone coming in at mowat and going towards diamond would have to pass by them. |

grncnu: Thanks for the details of Mattawapika dam. If anyone is going there, could they post a flyer? Assuming there is an appropriate spot for this type of info. Lisa and Trevor at Mowats Landing have confirmed they have flyers available at their store, have one posted on their door and are handing out to those who stop in and to canoeist who purchase permits from them. They will also post it at the boat launch on the MNR sign. If anyone else thinks of other good spots, please let us know, or go ahead and post (if appropriate, be kind to mother nature), thanks again for all the kind help. |

I am not sure if there is a place at the Mattawapika dam. The Mitchell's who live at the dam can be reached at 705-676-2116 (or could a few years back). It would help to catch those who might miss the poster at Mowat's or are arriving at the dam from up- or downstream on the Montreal River. |

brian: Thanks, I've contacted the Mitchell's (Carolyn), she will get a flyer from Trevor and Lisa the next time she is at Mowats Landing and post(they do not have internet). |

Sorry we heard helicopters the weekend of 21,22 not 14, 15. It may have been searching for fires after the big storm on Sat. The sign at the gov't dock would be a great place to post. I was talking about the Mattawapika dam. Myles Mitchel runs the service to tow motor boats around the dam. He also lives there. I believe he would be more than happy to help by handing out fliers. He likely sees more people going into LE than Lisa and Trevor. Immediately beside the dam is the put in for paddlers. There are places to put the signs there. I am sure Myles would do that too. That way you can target paddlers and motorboats. Will print and re supply Myles when we go in again in August, if I remember I will bring a staple gun. I did not ask which camp they were from and did not see (or look to see) which camp. It must of been a camp because the boys seemed to be 12-15 yrs. with 2 leaders in their 20's. About 5-6 canoes. |

walleyehunter: No worries, the past weekend they were likely flying for fire checking. If you have contact info for Myles, let me know, put in sounds like a good spot to post, or when you go in Aug. that would be great. We contacted camps on Lake Temagami only. Do you know if there are ones on Lady Evelyn, perhaps the group you came upon was from there. |

No canoe type camps on LE. 4-5 lodges but no canoe camps. I can not find Myles number. I believe the Mitchels also run one of the lodges on LE. The Mitchels are good people and have been on LE for years. If you spoke to Carolyn, Myles will get the message, they are just that type of people. |

Update: Week 39, it's now 9 months without Daniel. When the snow came, we thought we would find him. When the spring ice-out came, we thought we would find him. Now summer is half over, and nothing more since his winter clothing was found on May 20th. How long do we search? We are planning to get together with the OPP and those who have played a key role in our search for Daniel up north, within the next 2 weeks. Don and I experienced our first smudging ceremony together last night, with our gratitute to Pamela for bringing us greater clarity in our understanding of this journey. We have faith in the great spirit watching over Daniel. Temagami is a place that Daniel loves and respects. We have comfort in knowing that he is where he would want to be. Another full moon last night, the clouds behind it reminded me of toes, on a foot. As quickly as it appeared, it disappeared behind the clouds.
