I do not mean to be rude but have you ever thought that Daniel may not want to come home or be found? If that guy in the diner was him or even if it wasn't usually people drive to Temagami to get a way from things. It seems pretty obvious it was on his own accord. I am sorry for your loss and hope you can find some sort of answer in all the confusion and heal your souls in the process.

fullofquestions: What a great userid, we too are full of questions about Daniel's intentions. There are many reasons people go missing. Please ask yourself, "if it were my son or daughter, what would I do?" Even if they did not want to be found, wouldn't you want to know, are they safe and alive, come upon some hardship or dead?

As posted back on May 19th: "We too, try to rationalize this troubling situation. Contact is simple, why has Daniel not contacted anyone? Our only answer is he would contact us if he could. He cares a lot about his family and friends. We and those who care about him, must do whatever is in our power to search for him, giving us focus and hope." So I ask you, if it was you, could you live with doing nothing, simply assume it was on their own accord?

Update 1 Year Missing: I know I'm late in posting this, struggling with what to say. I thank Brian Back and Ottertooth for writing a News Brief to update where we are in our search, one year after Daniel went missing. Unfortunately, even with numerous search efforts, Daniel is still missing, out there somewhere.

Don and I lit a candle for Daniel, listened to "Spirits of the Forest", shed some tears, and reflected on the happy memories and all that we have been through this past year, a journey we never thought we would be on. But, we are much stronger and aware of missing persons and the struggles associated with trying to find someone.

Yesterday we were at a family wedding for Daniel's cousin, Nathan. It was comforting being with family and friends, but still a very emotional rollercoaster ride of ups and downs.

I thought about writing a poem, but the words weren't coming to me. So, in reaching out to Paul Hoy, he found a poem that spoke to me titled In Blackwater Woods written by Mary Oliver, summing up life so beautifully.

Our message to Daniel:
Daniel, know that we love you and miss you dearly. Not a day goes by that we don't think of you and all that you have to offer, how special you truly are. We've said it before and will say it again - whereever your journey has taken you our wish for you remains the same; that you are safe, healthy and happy. This is your journey, your choice we know that. It is comforting to know you are where you would want to be, Temagami, a captivating place you dearly love and respect. Whether you are with us on this earth or with the great spirits, know that you will always be in our hearts, we just need to figure out how to fill the hole that is there now. With all our Love, our wish for you is in this song XOXO My Wish

Update: 13 months that Daniel is missing as of Dec. 3rd. I apologize for not updating sooner. We have had many well wishers, but no new leads or information. We are just trying to get through this void without him.

For those in the area, please continue to be on the lookout.

Hard to believe it's our 2nd Christmas since Daniel went missing. Just want to take the time to wish our Ottertooth friends a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year.

2012 was a year of searching, in many cases a numbing blur for us. We are thankful for all the new friends we have come to know who have helped and supported us. We hope and pray for answers in 2013. Someone, somewhere, knows something. It is our journey to seek out the answers to Daniel's disappearance, for Daniel, for us, for peace.

Update: 14 months since Daniel went missing. Don and I are hopeful 2013 is the year we will get answers to Daniel's disappearance. Like us, there are other parents Looking for Answers in 2013 too as reported in the North Bay Nugget by Jennifer Hamilton-Mc Charles on Dec. 31, 2012. The North Bay Nugget has been helpful in continuing to raise awareness and keeping our message out there of our missing loved ones (Luc Joly-Durocher, Glen Wesley, Melanie Ethier, Robbie Aho and our son, Daniel).

The Reader's Digest published Daniel's story in their Jan. 2013 edition, titled Vanishing Point, starting on page 74. It is not condensed, pretty much the original story "Into the Light" written by Conor Mihell, published in Explore Magazine fall 2012 edition. The Reader's Digest has national coverage, so it's a great opportunity to get the word out and increase awareness of Daniel's disappearance.

With winter now here, we are hoping for a short winter and early ice out so our search efforts can resume in Temagami. We have no new information or leads, but still have a few more spots we want to check out. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to continue to spread the word and be on the lookout for signs of Daniel, greatly appreciated.

Wishing all our Ottertooth friends health, happiness, and simple abundance throughout 2013.

Dear Don and Maureen, just finished reading about your son Daniel this morning on the train on my way to work in the January issue of Reader's Digest.

I wanted to send you sincere heartfelt wishes that 2013 brings you any signs of your son.

After having read the article, I quickly rushed to work to google Daniel's story with the hopes that there had been further news or clues to his whereabouts.

I have never been to Temagami but know that its one of Canada's great treasures just like Haliburton which I visit very often. I can see why Daniel would have gone there for its the same reason most of us go up north - to get away from the rat race that life is and the destructive effect that it has on our souls.

I feel in my heart that Daniel would have been in contact with you both by now if it was possible for him to do so.

But having said that, you are all in my thoughts until your son is found and that somehow you have closure.

Warmest regards,

Ella

Ah, thanks Ella for your wishes. Temagami truly is a beautiful, spiritual area. Conor wrote an amazing story about Daniel and we are pleased with all the coverage, it is raising awareness of Daniel's disappearance.

We remain hopeful for finding something more and await our spring search, once the ice is out. My head tells me one thing (Daniel is with the spirits), but my heart won't let go, a little sliver of hope that he is out there, maybe someone with him. When his winter clothing was found in May, we thought we would be searching for his remains. That said, there have been no further signs, nothing more has been found since then.

For a while I've been thinking I'm the only one on this page, appreciate knowing someone is readng it, thanks.

FYI, here is a link to the archived pages startng Nov. 15, 201l. Simply click Next to go through each page. I'm trying to keep a fairly detailed log of what's happening. When searches are taking place, there are lots of details with lots of help and support from folks on this forum too.

Happy New Year to you too Malcolm! I hope to post the photos soon, just need to get captions setup, the memory card was OK. The BB was repaired and amazingly used again, so appreciate Rick's daughter finding it and your help in getting it back to us for Adam. I wonder if anyone will find Daniel's lost phone, it's out there somewhere, just like him, we're doing OK, as well as could be. Keep us posted when you plan to go up there. We took a trip last winter, may do one this year too!

Hello,

I met Dan many years back when we both went to Centennial Public School. I heard about Dan's story from a friend who also knew him. I have also passed his story on to many people hoping someone, somewhere can help. It's the best I can do from where I am.

I visit this site once or twice a week hoping you and your family get closure sooner rather than later.

May you find the answers you are looking for.

Good morning Trasker,
I just wanted to let you know that I think far more people then you realize are following this thread, with our hearts and thoughts with you.
I am from Lake Temagami, and canoed a familiar, if not same route, route that Daniel appeared to have done before (from his pictures). It truly is a beautiful trip. I also know the Diamond lake area very well and have been there many times (winter and summer). It really shakes me to know that someone so loved is missing in this area I call home.
I check your thread about once a week hoping for news. I promise I will never stop looking for signs everytime I return home.
All my best,
Dani

I'm really afraid to render an opinion or speak..I am from the states, enjoy Ontario tons, found out about Dan Trask seeking a hot tent builder of all things....dismayed by the cruel irony. I froze my feet at 17 and can't make it one nite in the bush without heat.

Is the liftover something one could walkover, i.e. is there a bridge there or just rushing water?

Did the sleepsack have Trask's hair in it?

0119 (Chris): Appreciate your post, we have had a number of Daniel's friends from school contact us expressing their concern and thoughts. Unfortunately, he did not have any contact with any prior to his disappearance or since. Please continue to spread the word, particularly to anyone who would be going to the Temagami backcountry. Bang on, we need answers!

claker (Dani): Tks for your support. It's good to know you and many others remain on the lookout and spread the word. I think most people in the Temagami backcountry know about Daniel's disappearance. But, you never know who may be out there, living in the bush, who may not know. If you are back up there this year, let us know. We will be spring searching as soon as the ice is out. It appears Daniel may be calling Temagami home too. The photos were taken when he was up for COTS in 2011. We were able to experience the spiritual beauty when we were up for COTS in 2012, we thank Daniel for this.

fallguy1000: All opinions and thoughts are appreciated, there are a lot of American friends who know much of the Temagami backcountry. Winter is wonderful, but cruel if one is not prepared. You must love the outdoors if you still seek it after experiencing frostbite injury. Initially when Daniel went missing, it was unusually warm, but then a quick cold snap. When his winter clothing was found in May, we faced the reality that Daniel would not survive the winter, since it was faded and likely there from the fall. But, puzzling why there are no other signs of him or his items such as snowshoes. The liftover has water, and was searched by the OPP and by our own search. In Aug. when we visited the OPP in New Liskeard, we confirmed the sleeping bag and items found in it were not Daniel's, it was aged much more, likely been there for a number of years, so no DNA testing. It is confusing how someone could loose their sleeping bag though.

There are obviously far better qualified persons than me, but sometimes those qualifications can lead to the wrong assumptions.

The OPP assumed the clothing was paradoxical shedding it seems. It is the best assumption.

What other logic is left that would have him leave his coat?

There are two other possibilities, well three, but I will only mention two. First, he may have gotten wet at the crossing headed north and removed those clothes planning to get them later. This is a bad assumption because the clothes weren't together, and if he was wet, why wouldn't he have lit a fire there to dry off, unless he couldn't lite a fire and then why would he advance? The second is that he removed his clothes for another reason heading south. I can think of two reasons. One is that he was bag soaked (no bivy probably) and damp or had fallen in on the shoreline and wanted to get dry, the other is that the clothes were catching on the brush and he decided it was imperitive that he move quickly as if he knew he were in trouble and could not firestart and assumed incorrectly he didn't need the coat. Perhaps he made his way along the southern shore hoping to get back to his car, but fell short, got wet at the crossing. You can test this theory easily...if he would have had trouble walking the shoreline (too deep or craggy) where his coat were found, he would have been forced into the bush; if forced into the bush, was it nasty dense enough that everything was catching him? If not, then the OPP assumption is far more valid.

Firestarting is difficult in November in the bush. Everything seems as damp as the rainforest..not even sure why, but I have to use firestarters to get things going and the fires rarely seem very good n hot. Conventional firestarting equipment (the sticks) are horrible in colder temps. If he couldn't get a fire going, and got very cold, perhaps he thought he could get by without the winter clothing and get back quicker, but that is a real stretch, you know? Not a horrible stretch in temps around freezing, it can feel warm in the sun, but nite is bad. Back to the water...neither theory is great. I don't think he could get a fire going.

If he made it to the location of the gathering on willpower, he would have travelled the shoreline south, and eventually the swamps or creeks would have forced him to turn east. It is the only other theory I can make sense of other than omission in the water scans, but the location of those scans should be revisited because he might have gone a long way in the currents in 7 months-strange stuff happens at 39 degrees, too. The eastern shore was a friendly place to him; easily walkable, even at nite. If he got as far as the swamp and couldn't cross; he probably dug into some swampgrass for the nite and the cold got him and wasn't visible by air.

He seemed like way too good of a guy to be alive and putting you through such a roller coaster.

Too many people are still dying from hypothermia-this year a couple on Alton Lake went over in the wind on October 9, found floating in lifevests.

regards

fallguy1000: Very insightful possibilities to consider. We too struggle with what his intentions were; was he headed NW to Maple Mtn or what we were leaning towards, back to the camp? We have no evidence that he had any fire starting materials with him. When he was there in the summer, he travelled mostly at night, but, so many variables including, weather, health, what he had with him, ability to travel (a couple of mediums say he fell off a cliff, accidental death, but another says he is still alive...more uncertainty).

Our search after the OPP completed their very thorough search, was focused on the area between where his clothing was found (all in a straight line from water into the bush). This area is off the regular route, and very boggy. As the OPP concurred, he could be a metre from where we are searching and we could not spot him (cadaver dogs did not find anything more). The water currents were unusual, which is why we also searched the NW side, and the NE side south beyond where the OPP searched along with divers.

If Daniel did perish there (and yes, I'm saying if since nothing more was found since his winter clothing in May - at that time I thought our search was for his remains), it will be a miracle to find him, not uncommon for hypothermic persons to want to burrow into small spots, swamp or not. But, we must continue to search, there has to be something of him and his few belongings, somewhere out there. Knowing Daniel, we have no reason to believe he would intentionally deceive us, but he was a risk taker.

It's so very sad to learn of the couple who died on Alton Lake, hypothermia is a reality that time of year, even for seasoned canoeists. We remain hopeful and will continue searching, so appreciate hearing all possibilities to consider.

Hello. I've just been reading about Daniel this past week after coming across his poster on a Facebook page dedicated to missing people in Ontario. I know this is late, but I have a good friend who's a health inspector in the New Liskeard area and she often boats into remote camps and lodges in the area to conduct inspections. I'm going to forward Daniel's flyer to her so she can keep her eyes peeled and maybe even post some of them.

Don't give up hope. Daniel seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. If he truly is/was leaving signs/symbols for you, this could all be part of some kind of plan he has. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Update: 15 months since Daniel went missing. The past month has been difficult, but glad to know lots of you are still out there reading the posts and continuing to raise awareness, including anon30, thanks.

In seeing the recent photos by Ron Miller Wolves feeding on moose I had chills go through me, with an overwhelming reminder of life and death in the wild. Devil's Mountain area was searched extensively for Daniel in our 2012 spring search.

I'd like to remind you what to look for as previously posted on June 28 and July 26, 2012. Besides Daniel himself, these items of his have to be out there somewhere.
What to look for:

- Grey/White Atlas aluminum Snowshoes, Size 9
- White zip Hoodie, Grey sweat pants
- Orange T-shirt as shown in picture
- Black T-shirt with Indian/Wolf on front
- Black Backpack, Black/Limegreen Gloves
- Creative rock structures, stone or wood carvings, wood chopping, oddities or items out of place.

If you spot anything, do not disturb or move it:
- Take a picture and note its GPS coordinates
- Immediately, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122

Printable version of updated flyer with these items listed: Daniel's Updated Flyer

I'd also like your help in getting answers to the following questions that have been lingering. During these winter months, we can still try to find some of the missing pieces to this puzzle by getting more information to plan our spring search efforts, appreciate your continued help.

1. Does anyone know "canoebear" or have a current email address?
2. Does anyone know about the silver cross at this campsite, marked with "Stubby"? Spotted July 10, 2012
3. As posted Sept. 1, 2012: We want you to be aware of other areas we want to check out, anticipating Daniel travelled further than expected. The image is from the new FOT map, area is N of Diamond Lk arm between Willow Lake and Lady Evelyn (the Red dot shows where Daniel's winter clothing was found). Areas to check include:
- Crowley L.
- Cleary Pond (292)
- Klutz L.
- No name shown (296) - Anyone been to this area?

I sent my friend Daniel's flyer. The good news is that she said the flyers are "everywhere up there, even the grocery store"; so people are definitely seeing them.

Again, hoping he's brought home soon. All the best to you.
