Hey guys,

Finished Part 3! The story of a 2 week canoe trip through the wilderness of the Western Temagami region: mishaps, wildlife, solitude and more. Continued from Smoothwater Loop Part 2. In this section we journey from Florence Lake, down the South Lady Evelyn River, up the North Lady Evelyn River, across a massive portage to Sunnywater Lake and home via Smoothwater Lake and the Montreal River. Come with me!

Excellent trip report. Funnily enough my wife and I were planning exactly same trip at exactly the same time (except we would've gone Woods-Hamlow-Sturgeon-Selkirk instead of via Einar to Solace). But we had to cancel. Hopefully this year!
Oh well, I'm glad you got it to yourselves and appreciated it so much and in the right spirit!
Your descriptions are very finely-observed and accurate, and capture the experience beautifully (we've covered that route twice, most recently in 1997!) So I know exactly what you mean about the water at the edge of Sunnywater Lake for example... I walked right into it more than once. And I certainly remember that pine tree! We once saw 15 mice come out of a crack in its trunk, at 10 second intervals.
Nice to hear nothing's changed much.
Once again, great trip report, thanks!

In all the decades of paddling through the confluence of the Florence and Lady E South rivers, I have seen moose there more times than not.

There is but one campsite between the one near Duff Lake Ridge where you swam and the road. It is a nice flat red pine site on the north shore downstream of White Rock Rapids. And a little tricky to spot if you are not looking for it.

It's a nice site Brian mentioned, but there was a large dead pine hugging precariously another tree right over the tent site. Hope it's fallen since then.
There's also a perfect site just downstream of the Fork, before the portage.

grncnu: That's so fun to hear your memories, especially about Sunnywater lake. It's hard to believe that what I said is true but it really is, isnt it! Unfortunately that old pine has fallen :-( I'm not sure if I mentioned that. It has a baby though, right beside it on the point so someday 100 years from now it will be replaced, lol.

Brian and Eddy_Turn: Good to know. Like I said, we weren't looking too closely. Definitely going to invest in an Ottertooth map next year and a GPS.
