Not sure if this topic appears elsewhere on the forum so forgive me if I've missed it somewhere else. On two recent trips from North Bay to Cobalt and Temagami, I was struck at the amount of dead evergreens visible from the highway. I initially thought these were spruce only but on a short jaunt down Marten Lake Rd to get a closer look, I see that Balsam Fir are also affected. I'm not sure if this "die-off" is recent or not but I haven't noticed it previously. I have next to no knowledge of tree diseases/infestations so I thought I would put it out to folks on here. Spruce Bud Worm?...But does that affect other species too? And the branches of all these dead trees are covered in heavy lichen-like masses...so a fungal infection/disease perhaps? It is very widespread and quite apparent once you start looking for it and know it's there. Thoughts anyone?
