Feb 09, 2008 11:58 AM THE CANADIAN PRESS and Toronto Star staff TEMAGAMI, Ont. – An air ambulance helicopter crashed last night in northern Ontario, injuring the four people aboard, police said early Saturday morning. The craft went down at the helicopter pad at Snake Lake near Temagami, about an hour north of North Bay. At least two of the people aboard the helicopter had serious injuries, said Sgt. Todd Proulx. A spokesperson for Ornge, the company representing the paramedics on board the helicopter, said she believed the injuries to the four people weren't life-threatening. The air ambulance, which was flying out of Sudbury, was headed to the scene of a snowmobile accident in the middle of Rib Lake. Because of the crash, the snowmobiler was taken off the lake on a sled by the OPP and then transported to Temiskaming Hospital in New Liskeard with life-threatening injuries. The occupants on the helicopter have also been taken to the Temiskaming Hospital. No names have been released. Transportation Safety Board officials are expected to inspect the scene today. With the helicopter out of service, air ambulances from nearby regions will expand their coverage to include the Sudbury area. Brian: This is almost word for word from the OPP press release. |

It is always a tragedy to hear about an EMS vehicle crashing. They are vital to the survival of many in a accident that needs help. We all hope the EMS workers are fine and not seriously hurt. Bill |

All I cannot give names at present, but I have seen some of the Crash Photos. The Cabin Is Intact... No Rotor Penetration occurred, which was my greatest fear. Word is it was a relatively "gentle" crash... as crashes go... and no fire... As Airfolks know, spinal and head injuries are the main concern... but No Fire is good. Prayers, and Concerned Best Wishes ought Remain. Regards Sundown |

Irishfeid and Bush-Pilot The Cabin fell pretty much flat-orientation on the CaptainSide... front/rear seat left. Pilot knew he was going down, took the safest blow, likely. Sundown (Message edited by sundown on February 9, 2008) |

Non-Official Reports indicate a very bad circumstance for the Sledder. And, the type of injuries I suggested for Our Heroic Medivac Team. All reports are unofficial. Strong Prayers are indicated as necessary for All Involved, and Their Families, Their Loved Ones and Their Community. Sundown |

This was released today by CHL Safety. Update: Sunday 1400 EST I have received permission from the pilots to release their names and medical situation: PIC: Greg Harper FO: Michael Bain Greg sustained injuries typical of a helicopter crash, with a slight concussion, several broken ribs and a collapsed lung. His prognosis is good. He is recovering in hospital in Sudbury. Michael suffered the most severe injuries with a broken back and a crushed verterbrae. After undergoing 6 hrs of surgery yesterday, he awoke this morning with full movement, was able to sit up in his hospital bed and even went for a walk down the hallway to see his wife and 11 month old daughter. He remains in the ICU in Toronto Sunnybrook Hospital. Of the two medics, (whose names I cannot release as they do not work for us), one suffered a broken rib and some general brusing and the other also suffered some spinal injury, (without deficits) and is scheduled to undergo surgery within 48 hrs to remove bone fragments. All 4 crew members are in good spirits, and given the nature of this accident, all CHL personnel , from the Company President down, are thrilled that the four are expected to make full recoveries. All four crew were wearing helmets. The aircraft is in the process of being recovered. The TSB is in control of the investigation and as we learn more, I will certainly share what I can. The thought of the day is this: Flying is serious business and can produce severe consequences when a flight does not work out as planned. I for one fully appreciate that it is important for all our crews to consider this truth every single day. I am so pleased that our crew appears to have made it through this event with a minimum of injuries in what can be an unforgiving occupation. Godspeed to you all. I received this from Doug Adams of Northland Paradise Lodge on Snake Lake: This past Friday evening at about 10:30 or so, a Medi-Vac helicopter crash landed approximately 200 yards from the lodge. It was on the other side of the causeway in what is locally known as the "pike pond" . We were watching TV when the dog started howling at what we assumed was a noisy train coming southbound into town. He never howls at it when its across the pike pond but it was a warmer than usual snowy night and I figured the sound was traveling easier. An hour later, when we were going to bed, we noticed several flashing red lights..... fire trucks, ambulance, OPP cars and snowmobiles....all lined up along the road. After watching that excitement for a while, we went to bed and found out on Saturday morning that it had been a plane crash. All 4 people on the helicopter were shook up but were alive. First reports were that there had been a ski-doo wreck where a guy had tried to drive through a dock on some local lake and only got part way through it and an ambulance had brought him to the heli-pad to be airlifted to Sudbury only to be involved in this accident a few seconds after lift-off (it just wasn't his day). Today, the story is that the helicopter had landed to pick up the ambulance crew to fly into the remote lake where the ski-doo guy was waiting for it. Tomorrow's story....that's anybody's guess. One of the pilots grew up here several years ago and now flies these types of helicopters. He's emailed me a few times and says that he's fine, a couple others are hurting a bit but doing okay and the fourth guy is still in pretty bad shape but will make it, eventually. Anyways, for those of you that can picture the pike pond, the crash site is on the west side of it, on the point where you go into the back west bay. Fortunately, it went down in the trees which helped break the fall and didn't land on the ice where it would have certainly broke through. It appears as if there isn't any fuel leakage into the water. Right in front of the plane, the water is only 4 to 8 feet deep along that part of the shoreline but a crash there could have had more serious results with drownings been predictable. The pond has a healthy population of small pike and kids of all ages have a lot of fun with them every summer.
