i was reading the council minutes from january, and someone from marten river brought to council plans for highway "development" around the entrance to the park. widening the highway between the park and hwy 64, extending the turning lane into the park..but here's where it made no sense to me what-so-ever..reducing the speed limit to 60 km/h...60...on a highway..where's the logic there? |

Dave: Perhaps they are looking at reducing the speed limit in order to reduce the number of accidents caused by people turning into or out of Marten River PP. A number of Provincial Parks have reduced speed limits in the area close to their entrance, for this reason. To confirm this might be the reason, you would have to see if they are justified in doing so because of accident statistics for that particular area. |

I think there's a lot of logic in a slower speed limit from say the bridge crossing the river to the south and #64 to the North of the park entrance. I have many years of experience pulling into MRiver PP with a motorhome..and towable behind. Can be nerve racking with someone on your bumper at 110kph, while you're trying to slow/turn into the park and kids walking the side of the highway going for candy at the store. You're not really in that big of a hurry to get your Canoe in the water are you? Roaring thru a village so you can enjoy peace and tranquility further up the road is a tad self serving. I also think the speed limit thru Temagami should be dropped further South of Town.. not after passing the PPark entrance. Should slow to 60 at Temagami Marine Road and be 50 by the time you hit the Park entrance right thru town. Should also throw a sign up banning the use of jake/engine brakes on the trucks that rumble thru every night... |

I commute from Temagami to North Bay. A couple times a year I see an impatient person driving northbound, get stuck behind someone else, then get to Marten River and see that 2nd lane open up (the turning lane into the park). They think it's a passing lane and pull out, only to have it end about 200 m later. If they're lucky (and quick) they can pass someone slow, but it can be dicey if they get stuck when the turning lane ends. They have to pull into oncoming traffic or stand on the brakes. Let's just say when I'm following that impatient person, I give them lots of room. Eventually we'll see Marten River and Temagami bypassed, but that won't happen until the 4-laning up 11 and 69 is finished (and likely 17 to the Soo). In the meantime, a reduced speed limit would be appropriate. |

curly, i don't really think there would be a bypass like that or a 4-lane hwy...to me it seems like it wouldn't be cost-feasible looking at the traffic compared to that south of north bay. not to mention all the environmental issues to be dealt with for all the lakes in the area. it's geographically impossible to bypass the town of temagami..unless someone decides to be a dick and put a hwy through cassels lake and snake island lake (would never happen to lake temagami because of all the money on the lake) |

Just upgrading to the provincial standard. Getting rid of some rock cuts, cutting back the trees. Started last fall and will go on through the summer. Add at least 1/2 hour to your trip. Once I was stopped there for 45 minutes! |
