I've been reading much about Wakimika and Obabika... and the name Alex Mathias pops up quite often. How does one contact Alex? |

Thanks Ed - great help! Now if I could just figure out my route! Not to hijack my own thread... I've been trying to figure out the 805 access to Obabika Lake across the lodge property, but can't find anything on the maps! Back to the drawing board! |

You need to look at 41 I/16 , Lake Temagami. As you drive towards the north end of Emerald Lake, and as it starts to turn west look for a road going to your right. That should take you to Pond Lake. Put in and cross the lake then locate the portage out of Pond going north into Obabika. Recall this thread a few weeks ago? http://www.ottertooth.com/discus/messages/3/11103. html?1212408305 The Nastawgan Map shows the portage going from a bay at the extreme north end of Emerald. But I think this road starts a bit east of that point. go to: http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/nastawgan/ nastaw-3C.htm |

Have you seen these Obabika access maps? http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/Access/rou nd-lk.htm They don't show the Pond Lake cutoff. It heads north where 805 ends (where the red and black lines meet). The old portage between Pond and Obabika lakes is in the very northeast corner of Pond. In your canoe you will pass a second road landing on the east shore (old truck portage). Continue north to the far shore of the next bay. The lake has risen due to the beavers so you will paddle through some drowned Labrador tea before you find the trail. It is clear and wide and once you are at the portage landing it is obvious.

Why don't you try coming in from Ferguson Bay? It's only one long day or two easy days from there to Wakimika/Obabika (or if you're fast and an early starter you can get to Obabika IN A VERY LONG DAY). |

Thanks Otter Mel - we did that route about 5 years ago... had a surprise dip in the lake one morning getting into the canoe due to a slippery rock issue! Just looking for a different route this year. Last few years we've been doing the Mowat Landing to Maple Mountain trip and we're looking for a more meandering trip this year - thinking Obabika Lake and River should be just what we're looking for.
