I was running recently on the Mind Road and a couple stopped to tell me that a mile up the road that had seen a bear by the side of the road supposedly "unspooked" by vehicular traffic. Even though I was armed with pepper spray, I decided not to take any chances and returned to the landing.

In my recollection, no one in Temagami has ever been mauled by a bear. Does anyone believe that they actually pose any kind of threat in the region, even in the vicinity of the dump near the end of the Mine Rd?

My personal view was that you did the right thing by turning back and avoiding the encounter when possible. Others might not agree. Attacks are extremely rare in Ontario but have happened. Not sure about any in Temagami. Over the last 40 years of travelling the bush I have come across numerous bears and only five were fearless enough to come into our camps when we were there-two in park interiors-Quetico and Algonquin, two in other park roadside campsites and one up on the deck of a cabin.
My two cents.

About 4 kilometres from the west end of the Mine Road is the landfill, a popular bear haven. There are frequently lethargic, well-fed bears along the road in front of it.

Are you referring to the garbage dump on the north side of the road as landfill?
I saw bears there rooting through garbage.

otter_mel,
It is more politically correct to call i a land fill rather than a garbage dump. You are right about the location.

A bear is always a threat. Any animal big enough is a threat, moose, bear, dog. You did the right thing.

Carry a whistle/noise maker too. They have a better range than spray. Whistles don't need ammunition.
