OK...it's 1956..I'm 12 years old...I'm kneeling on the dock at Camp Chimo fishing for baitfish that my Dad likes to use while trolling for Lake Trout. It was really amazing how many different types of fish would come into that area under the pier...decent sized ones too! Anyway, one day I caught one that I thought was a catfish but when I saw that it had no whiskers I actually got scared of it and called someone over who worked at the camp. He said he had never seen anything like it before, but he would check with other people around the camp. The best guess I received was "Dogfish", but since I have never been sure, this Forum gives me a chance to find out once and for all. What the heck was it?? |

Bowfin or Burbot? These might be alternate names for Ling. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2Col umnSubPage/200074.html I've caught a couple, not in Temagami. They're tough and strong, I had to break my lure to get the hook out. |

THAT'S IT!!!!! That's what I caught!! I googled it and it IS officially known as a Burbot. It IS a relative of the Ling which is an ocean going fish from the Cod family. Ottertooth comes to the rescue yet again...thanks everybody!! Now the mystery is finally solved!! |

I am not surprised that they get them in the winter on Temagami....I have since found out that they call them Eelpouts ( or 'pouts ) in Minnesota and every February they have an Eeelpout Festival on Leech Lake in Walker, Minnesota....next year will be their 30th Annual Festival....it is partially kind of a joke because Burbots are SO ugly, but mostly it's because they are extremely good to eat!!! I'll give Shutter_Speed and Preacher equal credit for answering the question, and thanks to Dergon_Darkhelm for the ice fishing info. |

Burbot = Ling You might find a defination online that says they are related, subspecies, etc... But here in the North,, that's a common Ling. One ugly S.O.B. - I can remember being afraid of them when I was a kid (we used to catch them often when fishing for lake trout - they often inhabit the deepest parts of the lake - right on bottom) We always despised them, until an old Ojibway woman I knew told us how to clean them properly. She called them "freshwater cod" If you can get over their offensive appearance, believe it or not, they are some of the mildest, best tasting fish you'll ever eat. And you can get some big ones... over 10lbs

Wow,micmac. I'll have to tell my parents (the ice fishing type)your info. My mom always just pulls the ling onto the ice and leaves it for the fox that "make the rounds" at the huts. If it's actually good tasting maybe the fox will have to go hungry ;) |

I think the fact that this fish is SO ugly has caused regional names to be adopted in just about every area of the northern United States and Canada. Officially he is a Burbot...but he is widely known by the following names: Ling (If you want to see one Eelpout caught through the ice, Lawyer go to www.youtube.com and Freshwater Cod search "Burbot Mania") Lush Cusk Loche Gudgeon Mud Blower Maria Loch Lota Lota Spineless Catfish Dogfish Methy Mother Eel & probably a lot more!!!! |
