Following a very wet and rainy day yesterday the lake has stiffened up a little more after last night. The lake was wet with 3-4 inches of water on top in the some areas prior to the drop in temp. Very little snow on the ice, so that is good. Cold for today and tonight with a few flurries I believe. Steam is still rising from the water towards Narrows Isle and beyond looking south. It will be a few days yet before anyone would want to head down that way. I would think the NE arm would be good from the hub to town by tonight if there was a little bit of snow for slidders and the heat exchangers. I would stick to common sense in venturing about. There has already been a couple of sleds baptised over the last week and a bit. And thoes gentlemen are locals.

I talked with Campfire Island folks last night and they have no "safe" ice to speak of even in our sheltered "portage bay". They hope that isn't the case by the weekend.

Campfire Island across from the park? I will be putting the ice hut out on the weekend that is for sure. I don't know what they want for "safe ice", but as I mentioned in my previous post, going to town would not bother me in the least. I know they are the folks that like to plow a road right across the main trail, and yes it is to early for a vehicle, but a sled, no fear. If you don't know where your going. DON'T. |

Ojig... talked with them again and I misunderstood. It was all the water on top that was unsafe.. and the unknown under it. Doug started to work on the ice road today... drills and floods with auger... consistent 10 to 12 inches of ice from their island to the town ramp. |

Peterme, just click on the graphic header at the top of this page, or any page, where it says Temagami. It is all the same website: Ottertooth. |

Can anyone provide traveling info and ice conditions for North of Bear Island, the North Arm, specifically around Garden Island? Has anyone traveled up this way? I am thinking about heading up this weekend, the sled is on the island so it will be a walk-in. Thanks. |

Yes the conditions were great over the weekend. There were sleds travelling at least as far as Rabbitnose. I expect if the cold trend continues there could be a road to Bear Island by the New Year. |

It's pretty thick in Portage Bay.
But like anywhere... if you don't know.. don't go... or spud your way there. |

Was up for the weekend of the 17th, drilled holes just past the axe narrows and 13 inches of ice. There was about 12" of snow in the bush. Travel was good on the NE arm. |
