"Eagle Callen" Ther be a sacred place wher Eagles soar way-high U.P. in tha air & then come land along-side 'tis wilderness shore, amidst tha remote freshness of 'tis crystal clear lake which be enclosed by tha trappens of a fragrance scent of so much evergreen. Cry of an Eagle, 'tis sur, a shrill deafenen eerie cry-out from a bird with a lively spirit that causes a few NE canoe portagers, adventure-sum, to arouse from ther long winter nap & awake, to make a mad dash towards freedom, in risk of danger in order to hav an exciten adventure. Who tha hall are these here guys? 'Tis cry to freedom, turns out to be an alarm call to enter tha wilds of natures vacuum. To be part of, to get sucked-in + swollowed-U.P.. To be on a frantic freeway, to be a free-woodsman, in order to make them look like what be all round them. To blend into tha woods-workens, to become 1 with tha world of liven thins & tha outdoors, wildlife & natural scenery. Hearen an Eagle Call 'tis an enticen alluren summons to get drawn-in frenzy free into an unrestrained Land O' Lakes, just to be unconstrained/or liberated, of be-en of 1 of, sovereisty. What makes these here Canadians be succumbed, to be drawn-in to a savage space of an unsafe place, that hav a deadly treacherous of menace to it all. What makes these canoe campers like ed, hillbilly, kim, guy named sundown, even otter mel + others to live on tha edge & taken risk chances to a, (deliverance). Did they trip over a "Painted Turtle" on a rugged portage path & fall on to ther head? Did they all kiss too many French Girls with lip stick? Did they drink too much mountain dew when they wer kids? In tha off-season, did thet inhale too much good Indian Smoke? Do they hav too many wood splinters in ther vains by choppen/or splitten wood? 'Tis ther a fresh unhampered loose stain astray go-en around, to stay clear of? Maybe its tha seed & polland carried on tha spring breeze that makes these here guys, voyager stirred. Or wood it be decipheren Backswaterywoods navigable route course maps of lakes linked by native trail land crossens that leads to tha remote free remedy of maken them all suddenly lunge forward, right-in, fer a drug induced fix, into tha worst difficulties, just to be different/or crazed. To be able to do what they like, as they like & when they like. To get an earfull of a sudden burst of a Eagle Call that breaks tha silence of these Northwoods. Tha wild pitch tones that be U.P. in tha flurry of wind that be too easy to recall. Now exposed to its airs, of airy ways, to undergo a fragile release, to be perfectly free, free at last. Inquirers wanna no who open that cage & let that Bald-Bird fly wild & free inviten, as well as, encouragen those woodsmen out into tha open vastness, that set those guys far-off into a wilderness realm, exposed to tha ever changen elements/or even run sum wild river, that never 'twas run? My wife says these guys be bad influence that will affect me, 7 be in my best interest, to stay clear of. I'll hav none of that either, to be led astray, coaxed into tha Bare wilds, not me, well maybe, Heya? |

Good! I hope he doesn't freeze his privates off while he waits. That means that ice-out may be earlier.I'll be there waiting.Besides I need a few extra days this Spring to meet my trip objectives. |

I've had some Mallards in the little patch of open water near a creek inflow in my bay. I'm predicting mid-April in the Kawarthas, late April for Temagami. ... I was out on May 2nd for my early-season Temagami trip last year. |

Mic Mac's post from May 4,2009: "I spent the weekend paddling in Temagami, and would declare it ice-free... ! I was at the Mine Landing on May 2nd, and there was no ice as far as I could see. Very windy on the 2nd. I was even treated to a thunderstorm with hail in the afternoon - had to huddle under the rain tarp with a bottle of Crown Royal to ease the pain... The 3rd was nice - mostly sunny, but still damn cold. In any case, it felt great to be out on the water, and sleeping in a tent again." ________ On Obabika, the ice did not go out until May 5th,2009. It was Wednesday May 6th when we got out on Obabika. I was there waiting. Parts of Obabika, the South Basin where Obabika Lodge is located, were ice free on Friday, May 1st. ...... but not the North Basin. I think the ice has been out earlier than this for the past seven years, but not last year. It was later. I hope it goes out a bit earlier this year. May 1st or earlier is a good time to start canoeing because the bugs arrive on or about May 23rd....so that gives us about 3 weeks of peace.

Well lads... there is 20 to 22" of ice on the lake as of last week.. -19C temps nightly for the next week or so.. and I'm sure a good deep freeze to come yet. I wouldn't expect to get out there any early than history has presented in the last decade... |

I am not surprised that the wise native elder has made that early prediction. He has seen this winter unfold. I'd be happy with an April 28th breakup but we need some warm sunny days in mid April to dry out the roads as well. |
