Just wondering if anyone can update me on the blackfly situation in Temagami. I've got two trips in Temagami starting this weekend - one 3 day and one five day - back to back. Just wondering if I should bring along the bug tent, or is the situation manageable? Thanks Mike |

Micmac Take the bug tent, head net and gloves! Tape up your sleeves and pantlegs. They were sure buzzing me last weekend.I am still scratching bites. I have never seen them that bad. DEET did not work at all. |

Hey Mike, did a 5 day trip last Wednesday to Sunday - Adelaide out through Parsons to the Sturgeon and back through the Rawson cutoff to Laura Ck and Matagamasi - take the bug tent. I'm glad I had my small set up along with my head net. My experience was similar to Kim's! |

We spent six days travelling through the Muskego, finishing May 21, and we didn't see any bugs the entire trip! It was wonderful! It seems that anytime after the 23rd they start to get bad.

May 23rd is when they come out in Temagami. Enjoy the bush from ice out until about May 22 then get out of it until early July ... in the Temagami area. This year I left a bit earlier than usual on May 19th and there were only a few bugs about. Not enough to bug you If you go further north say up near the Albany River at about 51 degrees N they religiously arrive between July 12th to 15th with a vengeance and hang around for about 2 weeks. The only saving grace is that the blackflies will disappear if you have a fire..... but not the mozzies.

Given the steady amount and spread of rain this spring and the below normal temperatures, I see no reason they will not be around for the rest of the month. Unless they get hit by the riparian flu. |

Depends on where you are going. I know islands on Lake Temagami that are on big-water sections not near any creeks that rarely see blackflies. Now the backcountry, that's another nightmare. |

I'm just back from another 5 day trip in Temagami. I had an Outdoor Ed trip out last week; blackflies were bad, but manageable. Then I went out for another 5 days this week, and the blackflies stayed the same, but the mosquitos were relentless... almost too much to handle at times. What a difference a week can make. |

There will be no difference, in a super saturated solution of breathable air and black flies, Daltons Law of gases can be applied. That is there there will be equal amounts of Black flies throughout the Temagami District. Oh sure, you may see that there are masses over your head but be aware that they are straining to congregate near you and once you go away (screaming to your tent) they will drift back into this equal state of occupancy. |

My advice for a bug-free location in the Temagami backcountry in June: ... inside your bug tent ... (Message edited by micmac on June 16, 2009) |
