I remember skidding our canoes over ice on the southern half of Smoothwater Lake on May 14 in '89. A few years ago we came across a sign carved in wood at one of the campsites at the north end of Smoothwater that recounted a party being blocked by ice on May 19 (I forget the year...) |

Got in on Thursday the 17th.... timed it perfectly. The last few hundred yards to our cottage dock in the hub still had a fair bit of ice on the 16th. (Ps -- I came in exactly at ice out that late year in 1996. We were using a logging poll and a 2x4 to smash at the ice with the steel boat for a good long stretch. When I woke up the next day -- after tying one on the night before --- it was all gone )
