It is going to be close to the 30-year record set in 1996.

I remember skidding our canoes over ice on the southern half of Smoothwater Lake on May 14 in '89. A few years ago we came across a sign carved in wood at one of the campsites at the north end of Smoothwater that recounted a party being blocked by ice on May 19 (I forget the year...)

Got in on Thursday the 17th.... timed it perfectly. The last few hundred yards to our cottage dock in the hub still had a fair bit of ice on the 16th.

(Ps -- I came in exactly at ice out that late year in 1996. We were using a logging poll and a 2x4 to smash at the ice with the steel boat for a good long stretch. When I woke up the next day -- after tying one on the night before --- it was all gone :-) )
