After my daughter had a terrifying experience in the back country with a swarm of wasps, we are considering getting a satellite phone for trips. Does anyone have experience with using one in our Temagami area. IF so what brands are good and what services? Thanks in advance! |

The Iridium network has the best reputation. I was taking a sat phone for years, but had periodic issues with getting a connection. A lot of money and false sense of security for something so unreliable. Looking for something more reliable (and less expensive), I tried out the inReach. It has no voice, just digital text, email and Facebook. In 2 years I never had trouble making a connection and getting quick messages back and forth. Between a phone and the inReach, the reliability and speed comes down to audio vs text. Audio needs a stronger and solid connection. |

Ditto InReach. No issues in 3 seasons of traveling in Temagami - may be 50-60 days of usage. I think it's much cheaper than sat. phone. One can choose a plan to keep it active for few months and then freeze it for remainder of the year. |
