Hello everyone.. First timer to Temagami area. Rented a houseboat off access rd(mine rd). Anyone know of some nice spots to set camp. Somewhere with great fishing, swimming, clift jumping.... anything.. Thank you in advance! Paul |

camper2009 I have never rented a houseboat up there but I am tempted Which company did you use? Ask them where to find what you are looking for? Sandy Inlet seems to be popular ? Maybe too popular? Please be kind to the canoeists that you will encounter on the water? Offer a cold pint to a thirsty tripper? |

Hey Paul Here is a link to a map from this site. http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/map_tem_at las_sandy.htm Some other tips for you ? Visit the old growth trails on Temagami Island. Some huge trees in there to see. Stay put if it is windy. You are driving a sail and the wind can get wicked up there. PLEASE dont tie up to any decent campsites overnight and bump out a weary paddler. They may have been paddling for hours /days to get that site? Offer a paddler any spare fresh food that you may have? Dehydrated food gets boring after a while? Keep ALL your garbage on the boat. Visit Bear Island and say hello to the locals . I think that there will be a convenience store open there for any last minute forgotten items? Plan on spending more money for an extra prop for the boat? $250.00 should do it? The map you will get may not show all the shoals . Be careful Have fun!!!! |

You have to take into condsideration Temagami is a big lake, so it takes a while to get somewhere in a houseboat. There is Sand Point on the way north or you could stay at Witches Bay. If you are going to be here for a week then you could hit all spots easily.(pending gas and weather) Police are out and about on the lake at times, so the driver should be sober while you are under power. They can't say much if you are parked and the anchor is on bottom. If you plan on having a camp fire a couple nights I suggest you get your wood before you leave the dock. It would probably be the easiest thing to do in the long run. And the store is open on Bear Island if needed. There may be mice on your boat, so I would say bring a couple traps just in case. I didn't mind so much, but the women can get a bit freaked out listening to them run around after the lights go off. The owner will say not to park against shore as that is how they get on the boat, but I think they get on when the boat is parked against the dock at the lodge. Tidy up and have fun. |

Hi Camper. I'm sure you'll love the time spent on Temagami. If you're not too hung up on being at a sand beach, consider heading down to Cross Lake. It is my favorite place to go by boat when I have people with me who don't feel like portaging. You migth get some greater feeling of privacy down there. If I could offer a couple more pieces of advice beyond Kim's wisdom..... Watch the noise. Neither canoeists nor cottagers want to hear your music coming from the deck (even if it is some high quality Neil Young ;) ). Sound carries a great distance especially when it is calm on the Lake. Even normal conversation fueled by a few beers can become an annoyance to those nearby. Try, if it can be safely done, to anchor your houseboat in a somewhat "hidden" fashion. Many Lake folk consider them eyesores and a bit of "blending in" goes a long way. If you are planning to go to the bathroom shoreside (not sure of the head set-up on your houseboat) pleas use the provided toilets on campsites or, if no built-in toilet is available, at least get a good way away from shore and a campsite and bury in a cat hole. Enjoy! |

Ojig Dergon, Thanks for your replies! I'll check out those places on a map if i can find them! Does the store on Bear Island sell fire wood? Expensive? Dergon, I am prolly one of the most respectful campers. people and nature, so i'll make sure everyone respects aswell. I hate people who toss beer bottles, litter etc.. i wouldnt tollerate that... Thanks for all advice! Paul

Here is one link including Cross (south east of Temagami, accessible by boat) http://www.ottertooth.org/Temagami/Wilson/Route1/c ross-r-cedar.htm I wouldn't expect the Bear Island store to sell fire wood....mostly basic sundries and foodstuffs. I bet a quick call to your houseboat sales agent will get your luck on someone to provide a few days worth of seasoned wood though. ((and sorry if my advice came off as preachy .....I'm sure you're fully respectful! ))

Yes, Cross Lake is accessible from Temagami via houseboat. However, there are no the navigation/shoal markers past a certain point. Here's another recommendation: Hike to the top of High Rock on a clear day. The view is great. |

I clearly remember a call coming over the VHF radio a few years ago from a houseboat beached on a rock in the narrows to Cross Lake. I believe three-buoys staff got them off okay, but an embarassing moment for someone no doubt. If traveling later in the summer when water levels are low, I'd be traveling very slow. Plenty of water to get through if you stick to the middle once you're past the markers. Once in Cross Lake there are submerged stumps everywhere, even in the main channel. Be sure to pick up a shoal map from the Temagami Lakes Association building near the landing, if they dont supply them on board. The shoal maps include Cross Lake. http://www.tla-temagami.org/maps.html
