Thank you brian for your informative and (imo somewhat alarming) article in this Autumn's Temagami Times. If you have an electronic version of it that you wouldn't mind sharing here, I think many members here would very much enjoy the read.} |

It is alarming. Unfortunately, some people can't see the forest for the potential cottage site. We should be thankful for those on Council who understand the true value of Temagami, and who voted to uphold the Tenets. Brian's article first appeared on the Ottertooth main page in June, and is the second article still listed there under "Breaking News." |

With regard to upholding the "Tenets", does this allow for the clear cutting of trees along the shoreline and the excavation of materials ? This has resulted in further errosion into Lake Temagami. I am also curious as to the number of cottage owners on Lake Temagami who have had thier cottages or docks built from timber that was in the skyline reserve.Possibly some members could enlighten me with regard to this ongoing practice. |

Now, now …we all learned in grade school two wrongs don’t make a right. More alarming are the ongoing efforts by the councilman/ realtor to overturn the decision regarding the Ferguson Point property he sold. In other words, allow his buyer of an old inland mining claim to purchase the adjacent waterfront property and develop the parcel as waterfront cottage property despite denials by the Municipality and MNR. Also despite claiming “the town deserves to be alive and we are quickly dying here. I am not prepared to let that happen.” in Brian’s article, he apparently supports property tax relief for his buyer of the Ferguson point Property. http://www.temagami.ca/archive09/minutes09/Aug%201 3,%202009%20Minutes.pdf So good to see the councilman working hard for the greater good of the community.

As in any statement accuracy of the "facts" should be the paramount concern. The double standard of its OK for me but you can't have any has applied to this area for far to long and at the loss of many opportunities. With regard to overturning the decision of council , this is inaccurate as there has never been a waiver of position with regard to this " MINING PATENT LAND WITH SURFACE RIGHTS". Please try to be accurate when describing a parcel, it is important. As far as tax relief, I'm sure anyone with land that cannot be built on would certainly be adverse to paying taxes detemined by this value. When it comes to supporting ratepayers of a community I believe it is the resposibility of all coucilors to support acause that they are passionate about to help it forward in the community. eg"TENETS".Or is this a community of exclusivity where only certain issues are of any importance. I also learned in grade school to share the sandbox , possibly the most important lesson. |

Still waiting for comment with regard to post # 15.Or are these activities condoned by the ratepayers. I want to be clear so I can direct future inquiries from ratepayers, who wish to do the same a great many properties throughout the region. |

Lorraine. Are you referencing a specific accusation to skyline reserve cutting? Cottagers doing the cutting themselves or contractors taking wood? I would like to hear details. I do not speak for anyone but myself, but I certainly don't think that the majority of cottagers would want to have their buildings or docks made from illegally or unsustainably harvested wood. Not really my argument but your example of the clearcut does not help others concerned for the Temagami environment who volunteer their time to advocate against the destuction caused by a real clear cuts like this....

My own thoughts echo dergon-darkhelm There are remedies for unpermitted activity in Skyline Reserve Crown Land if you have knowledge of the same rather than bashing the Lake Temagami cottage community at large. Contact the forester for the Temagami Management Unit. I love Temagami because it is wild. However, I see the wildness being steadily hacked away. Therefore every affront becomes a line in the sand. I would be more enthusiastic about Lake Temagami development if I saw other steps taken to preserve what wilderness remains. For example I wouldn’t mind more development on Lake Temagami if the Municipality were proactive in preserving what remains of the wildlands to the north and west of the Lake. Lead the fight with the MNR for viewpoint and trail protection, demand sustainable logging practices rather than the eyesores like Al pictured above. Clearcuts like that are currently occurring just a short paddle beyond the security blanket that is the Skyline Reserve. Preserve and promote rather than consume the natural resources in your district. Get serious about ecotourism, all tourism. Resurrect the idea of a Temagami Wilderness Reserve. Councilman, I know I am dreaming, but I hope you are still reading. If too much of the wild disappears I will probably be gone too. I would be no great loss to the community, but leaving would be an enormous one for me.

I'm not sure I recognise the cut in alscool's picture, although I'm thinking it looks a little BCish. With regard to supporting your aforementioned ideas, I certainly support those efforts as I respect the Temagami Lakes and Backcountry and believe dialogue with the Crown is an ongoing battle to establish and preserve recreational areas for all user groups. |
