i think you should do one on the original boats in town..the Marie, Beaver Queen, Wanda, Bobs, Temagami, Spry, the Belle of Temagami (the grandest of them all), Keego (first gasoline boat in town), the Buzz..maybe even a little background on the Temagami Boat Line and the Temagami Navigation Company? hehehe

The folks in the ONBL office told us she was donated to a museum. Anyone heard of her since? As a youth, I saw various discarded boats such as her ditched in the woods alongside Highway 11. |

There are pieces of the Naiad at the Muskoka Steamship Museum at the wharf in Gravenhurst.
Where along the highway did you see these scraps? |

Tucked into the woods, perhaps 30-40'from the highway's edge south of town. Haven't seen the remnants in many years. Also, there was one in Boatline Bay's little cove to the far left as you approach it from the lake. That one was tied to shore, but the aft portion completely submerged. Cannot remember its name. It, too, was painted gray like the Ramona in her final years. Shorter than the Grey Owl, but an old sedan with open aft. I floated up to it and removed its gauge panel -- a Kermath. |

I should add that this boat was sitting on the bottom of the lake with water up to the bottom of the dash -- a dead craft. |

Boy, that highway site now tweaks memories. Can you be more specific?
What did the Grey Owl look like? Was it similar to the Ramona with a roof the full length of the passenger cabin? Like this boat:

Brian: Recently, in another thread, you mentioned that the Belle of Temagami was retired in 1945; this jibes with the account in Tatley's "Northern Steamboats".
I first visited Lake Temagami on Labour Day weekend, 1941. My father and I fully expected to take the Belle, but she was docked and out of service. With no motorboat, our family had to rely on the boat line to get to Garden Island. Although I was up on the lake for two weeks every year in the forties, I never rode on the Belle, or even saw her under way. I am pretty sure that we took the Iona in the war years (hence as Angus reports,at the first sight, the Aubrey looked like the Queen Mary)
If The Belle remained in service, it was not on the North run.

Thanks. I do know in the war years with rationing and low tourist traffic, it was tough for Jack Sproat, the owner, to keep her running. |

Brian, I saw those abandoned boats near the highway about 35 yrs ago. They were here and there -- not one site. Seems they were well south of town, maybe a few miles, but less than 20. Wish I could help you more. Will get a decent photo of the Grey Owl posted within a day. I have a movie showing the Belle of Temagami underway supposedly in 1951. |

I think I know that movie. The seller was on this forum in the past. He mistook the Modello for the Belle. The Belle was retired in 1945. |

However, I am certain about this boat. It's the Grey Owl on which we rode to our cottage every summer for many years. Always driven by Donald Potts.  |
