Can you feel it?

I am posting from precisely 2378.9 km south of Bear Island and spring is definitely in the air here in Northwest Florida. The live oaks, hickories and citrus trees are all starting to bud out. The loons, geese and ducks that spend the winter in our bay are beginnning to leave, heading north for the summer.

I don’t know exactly where we are going on our trip this spring, but that’s ok. I am in good hands as my tripping-guru buddies are busy planning the details of the route.

This weekend I will be busy looking at the maps… Dreaming. … Looking forward to seeing good friends. Travel arrangements, logistics, meal plans and happy hour are all being worked out. The new boots I ordered online arrived in the mail today.

I hope my fellow friends of Temagami are also savoring the sweet sense of anticipation and looking forward to this year’s adventures whatever they may be.

It won’t be long now.

You should get a new dog... that way you can check on Springs' arrival without having to look over your fence.
Just a suggestion.
Ed.

I am envious...too many years since visiting Temagami and a few more yet.

I am considering a new canoe. Would love wood/canvas but want a lighter boat. Any commernt on the Nova Vraft Prospector and the Blue Steel lay up?

Thanks

If you are planning to canoe on lakes and stay mostly off rivers an "FRP style laminate" would be OK. If you are planning to run rivers, where there is a risk of hitting rocks, you will get microcracking of the laminate.Over time this may destroy your canoe.

But they are very light. So that may be the biggest factor in your decision.

Eventually all canoes will succumb to the rigors of river travel. Even the well respected Royalex will show signs of wear and need replacement.

Thanks, Ed. This will be an all purpose canoe that will stay mailly on flatwater but I want the option of long weekend paddles that may involve rivers but nothing more than class II rapids.

Anticipation of Spring comes closer with a blown up snowmobile :-( So now I too turn my attention to planning a fun and exciting trip with friends. So don't worry Doc, this trip will be filled with all the highs and lows that spring time in Temagami throws at you and at the end of the day as we warm by the fire with your finest Cognac, your be glad to have to have joined the trip dubbed "the route less traveled."}

You should learn to drive your snowmobile slower. That way it would last much longer.

I spent the afternoon paddling down the Beaver River, which flows past my house. The water is cold and high and the current steady. Three hours brought us out at a bend in the highway.
A short hop by all standards, but very sweet. To be paddling again, and only March. Spring trips are shaping up with friends and the big September plans are taking rough shape. Anyone in southern Ontario who wants a lovely day paddle, consider Kimberley to Thornbury on the Beaver, a bit of white water at the north end, but mostly a beautiful meander through flooded lowlands of hardwood.

just north of kimberley on Grey Road #13.
One and a half kilometres north of the junction wtih Grey Rd. #7.
You can leave your car at the parking area at the put in. There is a blue sign on the west side of the road and a short access rd to the water's edge. it is about three hours of easy paddling down to the Epping Road which is a common take out. one and a quarter past there is the take out at Heathcote, and Slabtown is another hour of white water, challenging at times, beyond that. Good luck.

Looks like a good bush dog.You should bring him along with you.
And already boat ready. Should be a good fit.
Does he keep bears away?

Ed, I would love to bring him. It used to be cheap and easy to fly your dog around. Not so anymore. It is practically impossible to fly pets out of the Southern U.S. from May 15th to September 15th.

More importantly his mom won’t let him go. I guess she is afraid he will be eaten by a bear.

I kind of knew what the answer was going to be.
Also, flying in the hold of a Jet is pretty hard on them irrespective of the cost.

I take my dog with me most of the time, but I am always concerned that I will lose her or she will get into trouble with a bear,a wolf pack,or some other.... miscellaneous, yet to be determined.... trouble.
