Does anyone have any updates on Red Cedar Lake? We have our annual trip planned for the first week of June and are getting anxious as levels are down in the area, any info would be greatly appreciated. In the past we have seen The Marten River flowing full force into Red Cedar Lake however we have also seen it just trickling in over the rocks.
Again any updates would be great.

Hi Weepished,

I am up this weekend for 4 days on Thistle Lake (Island) right below Red Cedar so will give you an update as I always go to the dams for fishing or to walk the trails.

I just checked the OPG site and there is now for the first time an active flow from Red Cedar into Thistle (2.8 cms from zero a month ago)

I am surprised to see this flow when Temagami and Red Cedar are at such low levels. Unless there has been lots of rain I cannot see why they are releasing so much water??? Anyone know. Our lake is extremely low or at least it was when I was there three weeks ago and maybe they are concerned about the low water on the Lower Temagami and or the Sturgeon River which flows into Sturgeon Falls.

I will give everyone an update early next week but I expect it's not good news for people canoeing, camping, and living higher up than Thistle.

Water levels have gone up 6 feet on the beach on Thistle but while up there I heard they were shutting down any overflow on the dam. So back to zero to conserve water up above. Not sure why it was opened in the first place. Temagami River down to River Valley extremely low....going to lose a ton of paint this summer.

There is extraordinary anxiety over water levels. Water is lower, not gone.

There are persistent reports on this forum of the low water level on the dam-controlled lakes and rivers and this may be causing the general anxiety about all water. These dam-affected waters are extraordinarily low because OPG opened the dams in winter, as they always do, to compensate for spring flooding that never came.

The low water in the dam-controlled areas is a concern for motorboaters, not canoeists. Everywhere else, today, the water is canoeable, though we should expect rain to maintain this. For the dammed waters, pray for lots of rain.

Dam-controlled waters:
Four Bass Lake
Cross Lake
Matabitchuan River
Montreal River
Lady Evelyn Lake
Sucker Gut Lake
Willow Island Lake
Lake Temagami
Cross Lake
Red Cedar Lake
Thistle Lake
Temagami River
Sturgeon River below Temagami River
Maskinonge Lake
Chiniguchi River below Maskinonge Lake
Wanapitei Lake

It has been an extremely unusual year. My biggest concern other than boat safety is the fragile fishing ecosystem. In our lake low water this early in the year causes some major problems starting with fish spawning grounds not being available.

I like to keep track of the dam because it has such a major influence on our quality of life at the cottage, ie: beach, docks, fishing and so much more.

Fish spawn should be fine. They will adapt and have already spawned in what ever shallows they could find. It would have been a disaster if they had of spawned and then the water God's filled everything back up and washed the eggs/fry into deep water.

I just wish I had time to get up and fix all my broken docks while the water is down...

Can anybody comment on the water levels on Temagami? We're heading up to the cottage on Sunday for 2 weeks. Hoping the levels are up from when we were last there May 24 weekend!
We've had more than enough rain here in Ottawa lately....hope you got the same in Temagami!
Wayne...hope you got your docks fixed. They looked high'n'dry in May!

It was still pretty low last sunday, but a bit higher than May 24th. I'm guessing it's still down about 20 inches from normal levels.

S/S
Thanks!
Should be interesting with the new (to me) boat!
Any idea what shape the access road is in?
Hopefully there's been enough rain that they can grade it properly!

it was wash-boardy last weekend, but I imagine they would get it graded before Canada Day and the long weekend.

Its been about 10 years since I fished Red Cedar Lake but I had luck for walleye at the end of Campden Bay. Below the dam in the rushing water was a good spot but this year with the low water levels there may not be any rushing water there.

Hi everyone, does anyone know if you can get through to Cross Lake right now? There's that one spot where it gets to about 3 feet.... have any houseboats been able to get through? Thanks!

Don't know about houseboats, but I know several people have gone there in standard outboard boats.

Thanks pine_sap, we have a smallish fishing boat so I am reassured we should be OK!
