Granted I might be a bit early, but does anyone have any guess on when you think the ice might be out on Temagami? Trying to plan a trip up in May and not sure which weekend to plan. Thanks! |

Still 2.5 to 3' of ice on the lake. I'm hoping for first week of May to be ice free. Wayne

Now here is a topic that is of interest. I am hoping for the first week of May. I want to be on the water on Sunday May 1st(or sooner) moving North as the ice goes out.. Hey Bush Pilot, are you able to help out here with some updates and advice as things start to happen. Thanks Ed. |

Irishfield: I think the second week of May is the historical average time for 'ice out' in Temagami. So you may be pretty close unless we get an 'early Spring'. Last year I was on Obabika heading North on Thursday May 13th. The ice there had been gone for just over 1 week although there was still ice piled up on shore in places.

Fingers x'd! I've got a lot of work to do on our newly acquired place so I can enjoy the summer! The earlier I start the better. Was hoping for Pickeral fishing the weekend of the 14th as well since last year opened the 15th..but of coarse the season opener got moved to the 21st thanks to the 3rd Sat Regulation. Hopefully warm weather and lots of rain before May. The ice was really good this year with minimal snow cover letting it get over 3' thick and good hard ice, so going to take some work to melt it out. Wayne

Still a ways to go. This is my son Kevin and I on Obabika Lake at the pressure crack in front of Alex Mathias's place on Monday. But the warm weather since has sped things up. Kim Cowan took the shot.

Thanks all! My hope was to combine the trip with some fishing on opening weekend (21st)..so this sounds good. As long as the weather / ice out equates to good fishing! Thanks again. |

The entrance in town has been roped off by the town. You can get on at Temagami Shores, or the end of Temagami Marine Rd. The lake is pretty wet right now, but it will drain off once the ice "pops". Can still get around good, but will need your windshield wipers on now and then. |

Ed I'll keep you posted, still 3 ft of ice on Georgian Bay yesterday! So further north still has a long way to go, also a lot of snow in the bush north of Lake Wanapitae, over 2 feet despite the warm weather on Wed. and Thurs. When I flew float planes we always had open water May 1 in Sudbury but the large lakes north of Wanapitae would have ice until the second week. Again, I'll let you know. |
