Looking forward to attending. I'm bringing my wife Kim up and this will be her first time.

I'm quite sure she will enjoy the time spent.

Thanks for the update.

Guys,
I'm coming with a friend this time and will be leaving on Sunday afternoon.
How is Wakimika River for getting to the lake for the petroglyph viewing?? I suppose it's very shallow now, barring any huge rains.

Kim, I'll just bring an extra tent.

Ed is on his own though. I'll need a quiet doghouse to sleep in.

Good question about Wakimika River conditions otter_mel...
I was planning to go up there earlier in the month so I hope it is passable.
Anyone been there recently?

I will be snoozing away from the usual place this time... so I shouldn't bother anyone tripper_dave.
Only the bears will be disturbed and if I don't have too much stuff derived from hops and sugar, even they will have a peaceful night.

But if you are still concerned... bring some earplugs.

"Black Bear-With-In"

Just tha presence of Black Bears in an area nearby, awakens an arouse stir of excitement in me. Be a "Spirit Guide", neighboren roundbout.
Sum be fortunate to be "Bear Like".
He'd be 1 with a make-UP mix of many fine natural traits.
Be level headed, voice of reason, good hearted, hav abit of restraint, hav sum no-how wisdom, be tractable, caller fer balance + harmony blend, defender champion fer waterywoods + wildlife, be a 1st helper fer those in deed of need and 1 with much forBearance, as I see it.
Maybe 1 day sum of that ther Black Bear fur wood rub of on me too.
Be my favorite "North Amerian Wild Animal" that I like to track-down that be so secret & solitary, but/or which I can't get enough of. Possibly, be tha death of me 1 day.
Come across Makwa paw tracks in tha sandy shore of Superior be a good omen, as well as Strong Medicine, fer sur.
Soon will be UP-aways, wher they'll all be, in our Autumn's Adventures.
By tha way, Happy Birthday to a good guy be-en U, tripper_dave, Heya!

I am finally able to attend the gatering on Obabika this year! 'Very excited. The maps are a great help as well as the time estimates. However, from the gate where do we go? Do we paddle? For how long? Or is the camping site down the portage from the gate?
How long of a paddle from the camp site to the main ceremonial site? Any other information would be appreciated. We will be glad to ontribute to the pot-luck.
Thank you, Nicole

I made it back Sunday night, after having attended with my son. It was well-worthwhile: where else do we have a chance to be openly accepted in a Native event with such a clear link to paddling. And the Obabika location is special: even without any ceremony, the presence of an age-old native culture can't be missed.

Alex is a great host - he came forward to greet us as we pulled in the day before, and there was enough room to park all the vehicles that arrived. Camping was close by for the folks that wanted to spend the evening with the "crowd", but we decided to camp a little bit off at the point just north where the River leaves the lake.

An amazing number of well-known folks showed u. If you wanted to get your Temagami Book autographed by the author, he was there! So was the Environmental Commissioner, as well others such as a well-known canoe instructress of impeccable lineage, an awfully light Jay who can't stay away from muddy shores, a Jack Russell with his side-kick Ed, a MicMaq named Mike, and various Tripping Hillbillies from southern Ontario including myself. Maybe 60 or 70 people in all!? Lots of chance to meet old acquaintences and to meet new folks...

It was my first attendance, and I stood quietly through the speech by Albert Dumont (?) in just the same way as I sit quietly through a church Mass, and "doused" myself in the pleasant smoke wafting from the sweetgrass near the end of the ceremony.

Food was good - the potluck format gave ample choice and there was lots - and the huge pot with moose stew and bannock on the side are a tradition at the core of the "feast", I believe.

We had lucked out with the weather which had been miserable the day before: the steady morning-rain yielded to blue in the sky by mid-afternoon and only delayed the event a bit.

It was was a great event to mark the end of summer, and I am sure I'll be there again in the coming years...

Glad you had a great time Erhard. And thanks for the great write-up.

My wife also enjoyed the event. This was her first time up to it as well.

Looking forward to the next one.
