Hi moyra

Here is some info for you.
http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/newsbriefs.htm

What kind of details are you looking for?

Sounds like about 60 people are attending so far.
Consider it a wilderness camping trip.
Do you have a canoe/kayak?
Are you coming by your self or with a group?
(Earthroots is setting up a car/canoe car pool out of Toronto)

I am confirming if a local First Nations dance/drum group is attending the gathering this year .

It will be a great weekend.

Here is some more info on a past gathering.

Hello Kim,

Thanks for telling me about the celebration. I really appriciate you taking the time to post interesting bits.

It looks like we will finally be able to get away and visit Temagami at that time so it is an interesting thing to keep in mind.

How was the gathering, Once again it fell on a week end I was unable to get off. I have wanted to stop in one weekend since meeting Alex several years ago. If it even meant mountain biking up Alex's rd. How many people were there? was it, acceptable weather? what were the discussion base around? (logging, native, paddling)? I think next year I will just booked it off early and fly into lake Friday(solo). Which days do most groups arrive and when is actual celebration? Satarday/eve? Does Alex partake? Theres a few questions but should make planning easier. Thanks

The Changing of the Season Ceremony went well. By my count there were 70 attending. Good weather, days 20 to 22c, nights 5 to 7c. We even had 6 people show up that was canoeing in the area and saw the signs and showed up. This was the largest showing in the four years it has been held. Many new faces and many old faces. Earthroots did an excellant job bring up most of the attendees. Next year we would like to see even more.
I will post my pictures and let you know where and when you can see them.
Bill

It was a great Gathering this year.

Once again I met some people that share many of the same interests as I share .Lots of stimulating conversation around the camp fire and the circle.
A very interesting mix of people.

The feather ceremony proved to be an uplifting part of the ceremony this year.Lots of emotion and genuine concern for Temagami and the land in general.
Very moving.

Mr.Gord Miller spoke on behalf of the province of Ontario. He spoke at length of the importance of preserving the wilderness and the cultural heritage of the Temagami Region.
Gord is a Timmins boy.
He is an avid outdoorsman and he understands where "we" are coming from.He was well received and it was great to have him present.

We had lots of "new campers" this year.
What a awesome place and time to have your first weekend wilderness camping experience.

This Gathering is growing more each year.
Thats a good thing

Kim, unfortunately I was not able to attend the gathering this year. I very much appreciate your update here.

In the news items for September there is a picture of a birch bark canoe. The photo is credited to you. I am wondering if you could provide the name of the builder and some details if you have any. Very much appreciated.

Dave, Rick Whitehead is the builder. He wrote about his experience in this story:

Sorry Dave.Just back from a late season canoe trip.
I met Rick up at Obabika.Real nice guy.He told me that most of his time was spent gathering and preparing the materials to build the canoe. The actual construction did not take that long.

He left the canoe there. He said that is where it belonged.

Thanks Brian and Kim,
This is an interesting story. I am sure that Rick is very proud of his accomplishment. I hope to get a close up look at the canoe in the spring.
