If you go, try to go early or late (May or September) to avoid crowds which seem to increase with every passing year.
Scarecrow Lake used to be quite empty but in recent years you always see parties on it at the height of the season. There aren't many (or good) campsites there, so take this into account.

Also, the times that Otter_mel mentions have cool nights, so you avoid the mid-summer haze, making for some crisp, spectacular vistas.

If you can get to Isphatina in the early Spring, say by mid to late May, you may be greeted by an amazing array of early Spring flowers as you get near the top. There seems to be some type of microclimate up there between the 2 ridges as you go up.
When I was there 2 Springs ago, there were no flowers showing on Scarecrow but magnificent ones near the ridge area.

As Otter Mel has pointed out Scarecrow does not have many sites on it. The island site is good for about one person only and should be closed due to overuse.
We need to ask MNR to put in a couple more campsites on Scarecrow......We may have to speak with them about suitable locations and maybe do it ourselves if they are not able.

Mid May not a problem for blackflies...
Late May ? depends on the year.
Usually they start coming out around the 24th of May but don;t get too bad til early June....but sometimes can be earlier.

Gudwulf:
The blackflies are not too bad in the early to mid part of May, but as doug_2 points it depends on the year.
I was out last year starting on May 4th, 2 days after the ice went out on Lake Temagami. There were no bugs around in any significant number until about Wednesday May 25th. I was on Wawiagama at the large campsite on the South side of the Lake about 1.53 km East of the Wawiagama River mouth. The wind was from the North East and blowing onto the campsite at about 22 kliks/hour from across the Lake. A couple of real old guys(that would be old guys a lot older than I am, were on the lake fishing in a large motorized cedar strip canoe painted grey). They were 80 and 85 years old and from the Port Rowan area. The oldest guy was Bill Popper who has been coming to Temagami to hunt and fish and canoe since about the early 1950's. They came over to visit and talk as I was setting up my site.It was early afternoon and there was not a bug anywhere. They were camped down the Lake to the West of me at an old road access point, and we had a good discussion. They left after about an hour and for dinner that night I decided to make a pizza. Making pizza from scratch is a lot of effort, but mostly a lot of time and when you do it, it needs a lot of watching as well.I mixed up my dough and added some yeast and put the pot onto a rock in the sun to warm a bit and let the yeast do it's thing. About 5:00Pm the yeast had done it's thing, the dough had risen and I started to get it flattened out to put in my pan. Unfortunately the wind shifted and started to come out of the South West , from behind my back and out of the forest came the biggest hoard of blackflies imaginable.I had probably 200 plus of the little devils swarming me as I tried to cook my pizza. I was in my tent that night by 6:30PM to get away from them.
When they come out they can be very nasty.

The year before I didn't see a single black fly so help me, until Sunday June 6th at approximately, about 12.47PM (please notice how precise I am in my notes. We need those funny little smiley faces here on ottertooth so we can use them in our posts) while travelling the same route through Wawiagama and then into Obabika Lake. I had stopped by an island in the South end of Obabika not far from the Narrows between the lower and upper Lake and a bit South of Goulards cottage. It was pouring rain with a stong wind from the South. I had stopped on the North or the lee of the Island for a rest, when the little devils struck. And they struck with a vengeance, as I paddled my butt out of there.

The above is a true bug story.

Ed, there are a pile of funny faces available. Just click on the smiley above the message-formatting box. It opens a big window of clickable faces and funnies. Sometimes your popup blocker will stop it from opening, so you may have to shut it off.
