Has anyone in this forum been visiting/living in Temagami since the mid to late 1960's?

The reason I'm asking is that my family vacationed there from 1965 to 1971 and I recently ran across some old photos, and now I'm wondering how much the area has changed.

We stayed at Camp Ketch-Un-Any, which, at the time, was owned by a fellow named Lou St.Germain. It was located near a small store with a gas dock called "White Gables".

I can remember going to Bear Island and visiting the Hudson Bay Store.

Also, we always used Phil Potts as a guide when we were there. If I remember correctly, he had a son who was around 12-15 years old at the time.

If anyone out there can fill in some of the blanks I would surely be grateful.

Phil Potts is my Grandfather. He passed away in 1986. The son you refer to sounds like my uncle Rick who is the youngest of Phil and Kay's children.

The old Hudson's bay building has since burnt down. If you go through the archives of pictures on this site you will see it smoldering and Gary Potts, Phil's oldest, standing by it.

White Gables has changed owners and names quite a bit. If you look on the news from last spring (on this site) you will see a blurb about Silver Water being sold to new owners. The new owners happen to be Phil's only daughter and her husband. It is called Deep Water Lodge and Phil's granddaughter and her husband now manage the lodge.

As for Camp Ket-chun-eny, Rick and Pauline Lockhart run the camp. (very nice people, I might add) Pauline's maiden name is St. Germaine. If this is not the case any longer than I apologize.

Bear Island has changed quite a bit since 1971. There are alot more houses and buildings, ie clinic, daycare. The lake will always be beautiful. Thank God for the Land Caution or we would have looked like Muskoka a long time ago.

There is alot more boat traffic now. Hope I answered some of your questions.

I imagine it must have been fun to sit in a boat all day with my grandfather. He had quite the character and sense of humour.

Yes oshkabewis. Ket-chun-eny is still run by Rick and Pauline....as I talk with Rick's uncle on an almost daily basis on a fishing forum.

Thank you very much, Oshkabewis, for the updates.

I am sorry to hear Phil passed away. As I remember, he was missing the tips of a couple of his fingers, and every year when we saw him we'd ask him how he'd lost them, and every year we'd get a different story !
One year a lake trout bit them off..another year he had to fight off a bear...another year a pack of wolves attacked him when he was trapping. He loved to get us going with his stories.

Thanks again. Time to thouroughly explore this great site.
