Great picture again this month Brian. If you look closely at the teepee structure you can see a sign near the top. Does it spell W A N N A S I N I? A stick partially obscures the lettering. Any ideas ? |

The photo is tucked away in a small second-floor room of the little Latchford museum, behind another display. And the museum itself has short hours so it has remained largely overlooked. Amazing you could read that sign on the web image. It actually says WAYWASIN.

Brian Latchford was my second home in the winter and I have been in the museum a couple of times. There are some old pics of the Mitchell and Murphy families as well as some from the terrible fire in Cobalt that ocurred back in what I believe to be , the early 20's. One problem tho, I couldnt bring up the pic to view? Mike |

I just spoke to Alex and asked him what Waywasin means. He says it refers to a sail or material for making a sail, which doesn't shed any light for us. Mike, it should work. Received lots of emails so it is working. Are you looking at the Photo of the Month page? |

That sure is a great photo, I was wondering about the animal head to the right of the moose, possibly a woodland caribou , and my mind went back 20 yrs. to a fall on LE, going down the river (before the damm) when I came up on what I thought was a moose swiming across, when I got closer it was a deer, I later talked to a old timer who called it a black deer,I think, said they use to hunt them back in the 40's and 50's on LE. Never seen anything like it since, anyone else have any thoughts ? Sure is a cool picture anyway! |

The animal in question is a young spikehorn bull moose with the nose removed. If prepared properly the moose nose is a delicacy. There is a very similar depiction of this scene on the Nastawgan map. |

Franklin, the noses are not removed in the photo, which is clear if you look at the original hanging in Latchford. There were dramatic changes made to produce that sketch on the Nastawgan map and it should not be used as a strict guide to the photo. Craig Macdonald and the artist used artistic license to make cultural additions, including the nose delicacy. The position of the hunters was changed. The noses were removed. The sign and headdress were removed. The animal heads were moved and skinned. Wooden crates added. And on and on. |

Gotta say, love the pic for this month. I'll have to try carrying my canoe that way..... if I can figure how to get it up there. |

It leaves a free hand for carrying a case of beer. |

Yes, but they probably didn't have beer in cases back then. Maybe he carried his gun or his fishing rod in his empty hand? The possibilities are endless. |

I think that he might be carrying a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken in that photo? Looks like KFC printed on the canoe? He must be delivering a bucket? |

It gets lost when shrunk and converted to jpeg for a web page. |
