Do any of yous believe that the some of the political issues should be talked about more to the youth. Seeing as we are the next generation. I myself as a Bear Island resident am concerned that the youth of today are not being taken seriously and should be included in more desicion making about political issues..}}

LIL Missabie

You have just mentioned a topic that has been on my mind for years and that is what about the youth of today. You are our immediate future and the base of the next geneations future. In my particular family all of my neices and nephews have college degrees and many of them have extended degrees.Every year we have a family picnic and it so happened that this past year we had two German exchange students with us as well as the brother of one who flew over to experience the real north. These boys excelled at everything they did. At the event I spoke to everyone and my main thesis was that it does not mean a hill of beans what degrees one has- what matters is what you do with it. To me, your initial response on the site is very impressive. It shows me that you are a concerned individual. I would like to hear more from others like yourself, as I am sure the other posters would also.

Being from Bear Island I am very sure you are a Native Canadian and that is all the more reason why you should express your opinions and concerns. As far as I am concerned the failure to involve the youth of today in these issues has been a big mistake on our part. Please accept my apology and by all means let us hear your concerns and interests.

Mike

Yes I am A Native canadian and very proud of it,, And on anothert part yes it is right what you said about Degrees having one doesnt make no difference for anyone doing something with it does.

But see that is also a big problem with are political disicions more now youth of today dont care about land claims and right of our poeple they care about making money and degrees help you make money fighting for our heritage and land doesnt. Stayin on reserve doesnt help either unless your in the band then youll make money.. Its always about money now look already were nagoitating land claims for money. The government will give us this much and that much"" and you know what most of the youth says.. Take the money, moneys great.. But some of us dis agree and neew to be more involved with our political status and hear where we stand in todays world as native Canadians

Bring it on Lil-Missabie! Take it from a middleaged educated white guy (aka the establishment.) You'll be living with our screw-ups longer than we will, if you don't set us straight. We need help and in-put on the TIP/TUP situation.

lil_missabie are you one of the young people you are concerned about?

I am curious what other Native Canadians think if you are out there reading this.

lil missabie, I must say that my knowledge of the native Canadians in your area is very limited and in fact almost non existent.Could you answer a question for me? You made a comment about being in the "Band". Arent all Native Canadians on Bear island in the Band? If not, what is the difference?

Years ago when I used to take the Northlander up for my winter trip a young lady who was on her spring holidays from college sat next to me. I began a conversation and soon found out that she was Chief Potts daughter. We had a wonderful conversation from North Bay to Temagami, as short as it was, and as she left I vividly remember wishing her the best in the future. Do you know anything of her and is she still in the area? I would think she would be in her 30's at the present time.

Manid00

I would like to thank you ever so much for your post. You have supplied me with more info than I ever thought my simple post would produce. Now that I am this far I have another request.

Would it be possible to somehow make contact with Paula? She seems to be a very private person at this time of her life and by no means do I wish to interfere. What I would like to do is ask her if she possibly remembers our chance encounter on the Northlander that spring? I am sure she met probably hundreds over the years however being an American on his way to spending 10 days in the cold bush may jog her memory. She may have thought I was a bit nuts for wanting to spend my holidays in this manner. As you can see, I have never forgotten and every time I pass through Temagami my subconscience extracts this memory and I think "I wonder whatever happened to that young lady that I met on the train". That is about it for now.

With all the termoil in the world today I thought it might be a refreshing moment to persue this human nature story. Thanks for all your help.

Hiya Mike,
I'm an old aquaintence of Paula's, grew up with her. I haven't see her in a few years but I do know she is listed here on the user list, she goes by the name...oshkabewis... her email addy should be listed there too...hope this helps you out. Oh and I think what manid00 means by belonging to the band is that there are certian cliques on the Island and if you arn't in the right one you don't get help from the band office...of course this is all hush hush and no one speaks out about it, or it could cost you alot in the end...if you get what I mean. I'm not scared to admit it though, because I don't have anything to lose!

Nature Freak,

Thanks so much for your your reply. The first thing I have to say is that I was a bit taken back by your handle. From your post you certainly seem to be anything but a Freak in any sense of the word. I find from your post that you are a very literate individual with some strong beliefs, similar to me. Please change that part of your handle, ok.

I had an email address for Paula and I sent a script but it was returned as she was not listed as a subscriber. Can you tell me what exactly is the "user list".

In the few replies I have recieved the political situation of the "Band" has started to emerge. It is just like down here in the states. A tough nut to crack.

Again, all I wanted to do is say hi and wish her the best.

Mike

Hiya Mike,
I had been contemplating changing my name as I don't quite feel it fits my personallity either. I really love nature in all it's aspects...hence the name I guess.I will give the matter more thought and see if I can come up with something more becoming of me.
High five Ed for pointing out where the user list is, I should have made my explanation a little clearer.
Anyhow if I see Paula around I will definatley be passing the message on to her.
Talk to you
}} again soon...January blessings to all

Hi All

Lil_Missabie, how are ya doing? Sure was great to run into you and your mom last Fall.

It took me a while to process the fact that my e-mail to Neodim was posted on this site. I sure didn't plan on that happening. I guess though, if one is going to spill their guts through an email or forum like this on the internet then one must expect some sort surprise.

Mike: I must be honest and state that I do not remember you. Sorry. I am a pretty friendly person and am not shy to chat with people so I have met many people in my travels. My life is pretty awesome now, My work is very rewarding and I am happily married to an awesome man. I can't really ask for much more than that.

I went back to Bear Island just after the Christmas holidays. It was really good to see everyone and beautiful Lake Temagami. I had been away almost three years.

Happiness to All!

Hi

Lil Missabie, I ran into you and your mom at the Bingo in Sudbury last fall.

If you look up my sign in name in the lists down below you will know who I am. I went and checked out your sign in name to make sure it was you. We only chatted for a couple of minutes maybe that is why you don't remember either?

Any way take care.

"some of the political issues should be talked about more to the youth"

I think every political issue should be talked about with youth. At the very least, I think every older person has a responsibility to be opened minded enough to hear the opinions of younger people: while those of us who have seen fewer winters (I've only seen 19) may not have as many life experiences, we are also more likely to be flexible, less likely to be jaded. Besides, whoever said age determines maturity or level of consciousness (I've met 8 year olds with a better understanding of the world than most boomers).

Lil-Missabie: you've made some interesting social observations about the people you live around. What do you think are some of the sources of this quest for money? Do you feel optimistic about this younger generation?
