Nice story Ghost-Brigade.
I will not be anywhere near the entrance of any river, as the ice leaves a Lake after reading that piece of prose.

Unfortunately, I need to be around here until at least April 20th.But, I was thinking that next Monday might be a good time to think about leaving for points North.
Definitely, everything I need to travel on over the next few weeks is already or almost ice free.

Now if only the back roads would dry up a bit.....

I just flew over Lake Wanapitae, the sat. photo shows it clear of ice but it's not, although it does look very dark. All of the small lakes south of highway 17 are open and the larger lakes are about half open, surprisingly there are still patches of snow in the bush.

Bush_p, did you see floes or large sheets of ice? All over the lake or in some sections?

This morning Wanapitae still had large sheets of ice on about 3/4 of the lake, there appeared to be a large opening at the mouth of the N. Wanapitae R. I flew up from Toronto this morning the only ice I saw was north of the French R. on a few of the larger lakes. The ice went out of Ramsey lake(in the centre of Sudbury)today. Wanapitae will be open tomorrow would be my guess.

ETA village of temagami from BI would have to be Friday for some...Saturday for the rest. People don't have the patience anymore for breakup. George's Airboat goes by and the wake is free to run its course moving the ice wit it. This weekend will be travelling.. however i guess you don't want to be breaking ice with a canoe.. ice off lake by next weekend i say...whoo-rah.

I'm still sticking to my April 24th prediction.....I mean calculation! A lot of scientific data was used to come up with this date! :-)

Hang on there Ed. I just did your route, Wawiagama still 80% ice covered, Obabika and Temagami 90% Chinigucci 60%. I think tsms calculations are pretty accurate. The good news is the bush roads should be drying up nicely with this incredible weather.

Thanks Bush Pilot.
I was thinking about going on Monday in view of the weather, but I have some other issues that may keep me home for a while yet.
Then I also notice that the deep freeze is coming back next week, so if everything doesn't disappear in the next few days, it will hang around for a while as the temperatures drop again.

Hi to all, My sister went home by boat today. As of this afternoon there is only small chunks of ice floating here and there on lake Temagami. It's wide open. Not raining as much as they said it would either. Only been raining here since about 11:00 this morning. Off and On. But not heavy like they said it would. I'll keep ya posted!}

Good Luck Ed!
You'll enjoy this trip. The Sturgeon (after the meanders) takes on a rather southern look, with mature hardwoods lining the banks as you get to the portage to Maskinonge L.
If anything, I'd check into the ice conditions on Maskinonge (being one of the larger lakes on you route), I hope you don't run into heavy head winds on Mastagamassi (take a look at pictographs on the west shore after the narrow part of the east leg of the lake).

Ghost

I haven't been over Panache recently but I would bet that it is open since all the lakes near Sudbury are open.

Ottertooth has set up a procedure for declaring break-up. We use Glen Toogood on Garden Island, Lake Temagami. Once Lake Temagami is fully open, as the deepest lake, virtually everything else is already. As well, the North Arm north of Garden, is one of the last big areas of the lake to go. Once Glen declares it open, then we call it break-up.

Glen has been recording breakup for 20 years.

Well TLA was boating on her yesterday, the 22nd, and other than a few ice patches floating around sounds like she's open. I still say the official "Glen" ice out will be the 25th tsm! LOL

Looks like this will be the earliest ice in in almost 20 years! Regardless of who's guess......um...I mean calculation is correct,we all win...more ice free days to spend on the water.
BTW Brian...what is the prize again for the correct date? :-)

The prize is an ice cake. But you have to collect it yourself.

Note warning on the side: not to be used in cocktails.

I guess I missed the date by 2 days! I must of had some flawed data that I used to make my calculations! :-)
When are you headed out Ed?

I was supposed to have gone yesterday, but it didn't happen, so maybe this next Monday.
