How are you guys making out with the gas prices going up - I'm assuming that living up in Northern Ontario you got to drive pretty far for everything you need and going to work - here in Pa we're paying about $0.83 per liter -

here in toronto we've been north of $1.10 for months, and you can generally add about .10 for temagami...

$127.9 per litre today went up 7 cents overnight. Will be afraid to put gas in the boat this summer.

In December I was costing out a lengthy trip to Red Lake/ Winnipeg area for canoeing this coming summer and budgeted $1.25/liter for gas. I can now see that was off the mark. If Temagami is $1.28/liter now, in the off season, it will be considerably higher in all other places north of there. Maybe $1.60/liter would be a better estimate.

$2.00 a gallon? Canadians haven't paid that in a long time, and never will again.

Pete
Gas is 1.28/litre in Sudbury, last summer gas was $1.40 at Tem. Marine. See you in a few months.

Well, maybe higher gas prices will result in less fishing, fewer paddlers, less ATV's running around and a slightly quieter Temagami.
Maybe people will go out for longer trips to justify the expense of the long drive.
Peak Oil is here to stay, we have to accept it.
I drive 100 miles each way to my job because I want to live in the country. I am forced to make changes to my lifestyle and, honestly, I welcome the situation forcing me as I would not make them on my own, even though I know I consume a lot of energy (oil).
If it is more expensive to truck trees out of Temagami due to higher gas prices, is it possible that it may result in less logging? I do not know. Possibly, possibly not. But we all know that without deterrents to our fuel consumption, we will keep doing whatever we please, which is how we got to this place in the first place. Just my two cents.

I think the problem has a lot to do with speculators pushing the prices up due to the middle east uncertainties. So far it is only Libya that exports and probably can't deliver.Somehow that has immediately affected the prices in Guelph, Sudbury ,Toronto etc. Eygpt has no oil exports, but when that was in play a few weeks ago , the prices were also pushed up.

But fireman, you are also correct, there may well be less economic activity in Temagami for several reasons, including more people going up for longer trips which is what I usually do. And eventually I will have to find some lower cost way to move all my canoeing gear up there.Probably a smaller truck or smaller SUV and a trailer might suffice instead of the huge gas sucker upper I presently have.

i think people are going to purchase gas regardless of the price, then complain about it among themselves ;). gotta love our government..please correct me if i'm wrong, but among first world countries, we pay the highest for gas while, in theory, having more oil than saudi arabia. ontario alone has a 14.7 cent tax on gas, 10 something cents from the feds...there's zero regulation, which is BS. it's always 10 cents cheaper in gravenhurst than anywhere else along the 11 corridor, and cheaper on the south bound than the north bound.

anyways, off the mini-rant, and back to topic...we'll complain, but pay it because we love to go where we do. but at the same time, i don't believe that gas will hit 1.50 like we're being told. wasn't that threatened quite a few years ago, but it ended up dropping slightly in the summer months? i think truckers need to park their trucks again, seemed to work last time

actually gasoline has always been much more expensive in europe (currently $6.48/gal. or about $1.75/litre in the netherlands), though the gap is steadily closing- it used to be twice as much.
the reality is that the price of gas is determined not by how much it is taxed, but by how much it is subsidized. these subsidies are mostly indirect, of course- everything from incredible breaks on taxes and royalties to the oil industry (ask ed stelmach about this) to simply giving up massive tracts of land in northern alberta to big oil to do with as it pleases, essentially free of charge- the land of course (which belongs to all of us) being forever destroyed as a result.
for an example of an oil-producing country that prices gasoline for the benefit of its own citizens rather than for the benefit of multinational corporations, see venezuela (12 cents a gallon or about 4 1/2 cents per litre).

Reading the responses, I come to the conclusion that anyone with much concern for the enviroment is well educated on most of the aspects of OIL.
But, personally, I hold myself accountable for my consumption, acknowledging that my Culture (read-government)has not provided me with better options (mass transit, etc.).
Still, this is where we are today and I find myself pondering whether, given that I live on the Beaver River, should I not embark on all my trips from my front door. If I am willing to stand behind my enviromental convictions, I feel the sacrifice must start with me.

...and then I pop open another beer, hop in my hot tub and soak in the sunshine and focus my attention on The Montreal Canadians chances in the play-offs.
Do you know what I mean?

The new E85 Chevys don't seem to mind a good drink of white lightning once in a while. Cheers.

I know there was a time when gas got so high you had to buy a locking gas cap - people would siphon gas out of your vechile if it was parked somewhere - I don't know if with the new vehicles that can be done anymore - years ago we would take a ride if we didn't have anything to do - now it's too expense to just take a ride - well we'll see what happens this coming summer - fewer fishing trips maybe -

Ram actually has the price of gas cheaper in Temagami than it is in North Bay ! Still bring your bank manager. I filled my truck yesterday in Temagami @ $1.279 It was $1.297 most places in North Bay.. $1.31 in Sundridge!

Gonna start burning my 100LL in the truck soon.. got a 1000 gallon tank of it here in the yard.. only paid $1.18 for it!
