Ed I also flew over the southern section of Sturgeon River south of Field, from 2000' it's spectacular at High Falls dam, the volume through the diversion east of the dam is impressive, would be even more so from the ground. Was also over Magnetawan R. today, a lot of white water if any one is so inclined. |

I think this is shaping up to be like the Spring of 2004 when the Sturgeon was really wild in the early part of the season. Conditions should be good on the smaller rivers and creeks this spring as well,Yorston, Ames, Pinetorch, Pilgrim,to mention a few that empty into the Sturgeon. |

Got a message from a friend who lives on Kukagami Lake this morning: She told me to abandon my plans for my first canoe trip of the season - May 6-7-8. Still too much ice and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Now I've got to look for an alternative for next weekend... |

I was speaking to her about a week ago and she was still walking across the lake. So it sounds as if not much has changed on Kukagami. Hopefully we will be able to get another clear satellite picture soon from NOAA to see if there is any change from last week on the smaller lakes. |

April 29: the ice went out on part of Cassels Lake from near Net Creek northward as far as can be seen in the direction of Obashkong Lake. Ice floes were coming down from the north most of the day. However, southward there has been no appreciable movement. There is a fair patch of open water on the east shore opposite Flag island. Water has come up about 12 inches in the last 48 hours. At the Rabbit Lake South Landing the new retaining wall structure is completed but still needs backfilling. For now the workmen have placed large boulders blocking access to the ramp and loading area for safety reasons, but these will be removed as soon as they are done backfilling. As for ice near the RL south landing, the big change from Apr 28 is that it is open from Rabbit Creek directly across the bay, and there is some open water farther out into the bay However the ice that remains in almost all of the bay as far as we can see towards the cliff near Rueben Lake has not yet turned black and seems to be about 6 inches thick, but is open and in chunks around the edges. I think that there is a reasonable chance that Cassels Lake will be open early next week, and presume the main body of Rabbit Lake could be as well if the weather holds. In the event that the south landing is not accessible due to ice, it could still be possible to launch from the Cassels Lake landing (if Snake Island Lake is not yet open) and boat down to Rabbit. Water levels are already higher than all last summer and docks should be quite accesible early this year.

I just flew over lake Wanapitae, two days ago it was mostly white, very solid looking. Today there are very large open areas and all the ice has turned black. Yesterday it was sunny and warm and today it's very windy, break-up could happen quickly. |

Micmac, why not do the Sturgeon or Temagami, early season whitewater will all be open. Or it's looking like most of the smaller lakes will be open by May 6, just not the big ones. |

Can anyone comment on the hub of Temagami and when folks will be travelling to the landing from Bear Island by boat? |

I hear that there is a boat channel open from Bear Island to the landing. Lots of black, candled ice still on the lake-just waiting for a good wind to take it out. |

I think today, the 5th, was my ice out prediction. Looks like most if not all of us were short on this call. |
