I am an easterner now living in the west and am looking for some recommendations pros/cons/biases of some ot the summer camps available to girls 9/10 years old in the Temagami area. I want my girls to have an eastern wilderness camp experince and intro to canoeing on warm water etc. I have gone though the list in ottertooth.com and would now like to hear peoples experiences/opinions of the different options available. Thanks for your help in choosing the right summer camp for my girls. |

Northwaters' trips with all girl groups, but I don't know if they take them out at 9 to 10 years of age. I have not sent my children there so I don't have much knowledge about Northwaters, but I have come across them while canoeing in the area and they run a tight ship.I have been impressed with their counsellors and campers. |

Wabun could accomodate your girls as well as wabikon. First hand knowledge of wabun would be available from a former councillor and current owner operator of the Temagami outfitters and trading post on Bear island...formally Mels Marke,t Fabian is his name. Give'er a try. I am currently looking into getting my daughter in at northwaters...priliminary info is not that great for myslef withthe camp but i do have connection...just hope they pan out. good luck westerly paddle. |

Wabun will take 10 year old girls for three weeks. It is a canoe tripping camp where young gilrs will go on trips from 3-7 days in length in the Temagami area. For more information visit www.wabun.com and email or call Dick and Margaret Lewis (their contact info should be on the site). They are very nice people who could provide you with all the info you need. |

I am not sure whether Keewaydin takes girls that young, but I know it well. Without a doubt, it is a successful program. The camp had to turn people away this year. I visited last year with my son and was impressed with how happy the youngest kids were and with their staff. |

Thanks everyone for all the help. Of the camps mentioned by the first 4 responses (Keewaydin, Northwaters and Wabun) they either do not take girls at that age 8/9 or their programs were too long (3 weeks) for them. Two of the camps listed, Wanapitei and Camp Temagami list shorter programs for that age group. Does anybody have info on either of those two camps? Thanks Again |
