I have just seen on the Western Onatario Forest fire sit report for June 8th ,(see MNR site and forest fires.) that a Fire ranger was attacked at 4 30 a.m. while at a small fire, in his tent north of Souix Look Out. Was evaced with minor wounds. FYI |

That's interesting. It was there when I posted this morning and I did check the link to make sure it worked. Basically, the fire ranger was in his tent when he heard a bear sniffing beside him.He swatted it with his arm and the bear grabbed it, but immediately let go, not even breaking the skin. The ranger blew his whistle and other rangers came running. The bear disappeared into the bush. The victim was treated for bruises.

The report is updated daily , sometimes twice a day. Unless its hot and dry and you think there may be something of interest,(then they don't up date for days it seems) I just am interested as per old job and buddies. Always been a fear , as you would be blind as to whom or what? prank or - are you a mid night snack? Happy paddlin. ps still a great site Brian |

Solopaddler: When I read the story, I was trying to figure out how a bear could get swatted on the nose through a tent wall and manage to grab the "swatters" hand as it contacted his snout for what must have been a millisecond. This bear must have had exceedingly fast reflexes to anticipate the swat and react the way he did. I think you have given us the most likely answer to this dilemma,a game I have played on my unsuspecting children many times over the years when they were young enough to be taken in by it. Now they just roll over and tell the "bear" to go away and leave them alone. |

Though that too but I bet that bear just pushed right in till he hit something meaty and munch. Pretty scary though. |
