Can anyone help me re how to get into Justin Lake? It looks like I would go up Amina Nipissing and there is possibly a snowmobile cutover path that could be portaged - approx. 1 km (based on the Latchford Trails document I have) that goes from the top of the lake over to Justin. I also wondered if you could come from the north through the Montreal into Edison Marsh and down Justin Creek, but do not know if this is possible. The third looks like coming from Bay Lake and taking the North Portage and then again on that snowmobile path across. Has anyone done it?

The Historic Map of Temagami suggests that people travelled through Justin Lk. Have you looked at this? It is viewable here on ottertooth. I would be interested in any findings. Do you have a link to the Latchford trails map?

I did have a look at the historic map and also have the Latchford trails map. I noted many old portages and routes but can't tell which ones may be clear. I've talked to a few local folks, but seems more people go that way in the winter on snowmobiles. I think we'll try coming up through Anima Nip and then the snowmobile trail from Crowrock Bay into First Justin. Alternately come across North Portage from Bay Lake to Anima Nip. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks.

I've contacted a friend of mine who probably knows the answer to your question. I asked the same one myself a few years ago and IIRC I came to the conclusion that the trails are probably there, just need to get out and confirm, which I've not done. The snowmobile trail marked on the Latchford Trails Map (I imagine you downloaded it from their website?) follows the original portage, so is probably quite serviceable. Are you just doing a little exploration?

Your best bet to access Justin is from the south along the "snowmobile trail" the North end where Justin creek flows out to the Montreal River through Edison Marsh would not be practical to attempt a portage - its virtually un-maintained, although it appears to be a historic portage route it would be very difficult going! also from the north end of Justin almost up to the Montreal river is all privately owned, and shouldn't be used unless you have permission! The furthest you could possibly paddle in the spring or during extremely wet weather is to the south end of Edison Marsh, but that area is also privately owned. Hope that helps.

Here's what my buddy replied:

There is a trail that goes up through the Justins and over to Kitt Lake or "Trout Lake". The trail leaves Kitt Lake out through the east side and travels over to Bay Lake up by the Edison Marsh. From Kitt Lk over to bay lake is more or less a road and its quite a fair distance. The trails heading up from Anima Nip should easily be spotted. They are used in the winter, and the fall. Rob Godden ( Latchford trapper) has all sorts of trails through that area for his rounds. I think one could travel to Trout Lk easy enough, but getting out to Bay Lk would be a long walk. There are some cottages on Kitt Lk and they take boats up Bay Lk and i think use old vehicles or maybe a tractor to head into Kitt Lake. Have not been up through there in several winters, but its used often.

I understand the trail from Anima Nip to Justin crosses a bog, suitable to a snowmachine, not so much a portage. Also there is private land on the Anima Nip side of things.
