A hiking partner and I just confirmed that the overland route to Ishpatina, from Capreol all the way to the start of the bushwhack section (the end of the "orange" section on the Ottertooth map - http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/heartland0 3b.htm) is drivable by all road vehicles. This includes the Sturgeon River crossing. Water levels are VERY low so we were actually able to drive across in a 2006 Chevrolet Impala. http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb334/Whiskey087/014.jpg (This forum is a dinosaur! Couldn't figure out how to upload/link to a photo) Thought this information might prove useful for anyone who's thinking about making the trek up to this beautiful piece of wilderness. We plan to do the hiking portion of the trip on October 1st and camp at the summit overnight. Does anyone have any information on the portion of the trip we didn't cover today? Are the trails completely overgrown? (Message edited by Wilson on September 13, 2011) (Message edited by Wilson on September 13, 2011) (Message edited by Wilson on September 13, 2011) |

as it says on the map you provided a link for, motorized traffic within the lady evelyn-smoothwater park is prohibited. as for driving across the river at gervais landing, i'm glad you made it, but i wouldn't encourage people to do it as water levels vary and it's always a judgement call... or you could cross in the malibu, then you get 5 inches of rain in the next 2 days and end up stranded on the wrong side... unfortunately, the condition of the road as you report it means atvs and motorboats on scarecrow lake. so much for "this beatiful piece of wilderness"! |

As that map shows, if it's a trail then it is not overgrown. Only the bushwhack section is. |
