Hi, My husband & I are considering renting a houseboat for a week. We are interested in Lake Temagami, as it sounds remote and lovely. There seems to be two types of houseboats offered, a small houseboat with a 10 HP motor and much larger houseboats. I think with just the two of us, the smaller houseboat would be best, but I am concerned with a small engine we won't be able to travel far. Any recommendations on whether to bring a fishing boat with motor or canoe? Are there rivers to canoe in? Thank you for any suggestions. Julie |

astromaid The 10hp should be fine for you. Check out some of the maps on this site for any rivers leading into Lake Temagami and other places of interest that you can access.Your houseboat rental company should provide detailed maps for you? Be kind to the paddlers out there and watch out for hidden shoals. Props are about $250.00 to replace? |

astromaid If you will only be the 2 of you, I would recommend the smaller ones . They are easier on gas, and more importantly, easier to dock and control in the wind. I've rented one of the Threebuoys on 2 occassions and had a great time.We were 2 families on one occassion, and 6 guys on the other. I would certainly recommend bringing a small boat, or better yet a canoe along for fishing or evening paddles. http://ketchunenylodge.com/houseboat.html has houseboats that are somewhere between the size of leisure Island's and Three Buoys, and are located at the hub so you won't have that monotonous ride up and down the North East Arm. Enjoy your trip. |

Thank you for the advise, we were leaning toward the smaller ones as I have read a few stories about difficulties when the wind is up. I just wanted to make sure the motor could handle so we will get to see quite a bit of the lake. Thank you for the website, I had not come across that one in my searches. I took a fly in fishing trip several years back and fell in love with the remoteness of Canada. The only sad thing about that trip was we only could two fish the entire week. Hopefully the fishing will be better at Temagami! |

There are some nice trails through the old growth on Temagami Island .You would have to dock at Temagami Lodge...I think?

There is a very old dock along the east side of the island. We docked our 16' boat there and did the trails 3 summers ago. There is probably room for a small houseboat along this dock. |

Hi I have rented a houseboat in the past on the Trent system and also am renting a 44' three buoys on Lake Temagami. The smaller boat should be fine for two people. I personally am bringing/towing a small fishing boat behind for economy and access to smaller bays. See under "places to see on Temagami" for all kinds of questions I have asked about houseboating on Temagami |
