Peterme,
Yes the slush is an issue if travelling where there is little skidoo traffic and no trails.

There was a major snowfall, 8 inches, followed by a major thaw and rain. Then on Thursday there were waves on the water on top of the ice. One of these lakes-on-ice is north of Garden Island and another west of Rabbitnose Island. They may freeze over with an inch of ice, but with two feet of water underneath, until it can drain. Dangerous spots, and there are probably others around the lake.

What is the earliest ice-out date on record?

Temps are calling for °15-18 into the next couple of weeks. We're record hot on the south end of Lake erie and the same pattern seems to be established well north past Temagami area.
