Hi People,

Wow! what a great site so many people that are friendly and so eager to help. Great Job to All!

I am looking at going to Lady Evelyn Lake at the end of May and was looking for some info and opinions on the surrounding area. Specifically on where we will renting a cottage at White Pine Lodge which is right across from Mowats Landing. I was also wondering if there was any road access to Maple Mountain as this both a fishing and hiking trip. I also heard that Helen Falls or Bridal Falls ( maybe they are the same) are a must see... that you can swim down them, not sure if that is true. I was also curious about some of the small lakes that surround near Mowats Landing as a stockpile of Trout fishing can be had. I am originally from Haieybury and lived there over 15 years ago through my youth, cannot believe i never took atvantage of Lady Evelyn when whe was in my own back yard...lol.
I will be going on the Silver Mining Trail in Cobalt and taking my guests to the Cobalt book store ..I also wanted to visit a childhood favorite in Engelehart called Kap-Kig-Iwan.
I am finding it difficult to find any info on Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park as all the Govt affiliated sites on it seem to have a link that is closed. Any help or details on the park will be apprciated as well.
If there are any must sees I have not mentioned or hidden gems just as hot fishing spots please feel free to help us out... the fish are usually safe with me around :-)
Any suggestions as to bait live or artificial to use the first week of June would be greatly apprecaited. Sorry for the lengthy post but as you can see I am a ex-northern boy excited to be going home....

Cobaltman,
There is no road access to Maple Mountain. You will have to canoe or take a motor boat from Mowat landing to Lady Evelyn and then down Sucker Gut Lake to and into Hobart Lake. As far as I know you can not use a motor boat on after you leave Sucker Gut and go to Hobart Lake. You will have to bring along canoes if you use a motor boat to get to Sucker gut. So you have to canoe Hobart and then into Tupper Lake where the Maple Mountain trail begins. You will have to camp on Hobart and hike Maple Mountain the next day. As for Helen Falls or Bridal Falls you will have to canoe from Tupper down Sucker Gut to the North Channel of Lady Evelyn River to the South Channel Lady Evelyn River to see the falls. Then south on the river to Willow Island Lake and then north on Willow Island to Sucker gut and the Lady Evelyn. Ther are no portage except at the damn south of Mowat Landing to get into Lady Evelyn and the portage on the North and South Channels of Lady Evelyn River. You can on use a motor boat on the river. Ther are no portage between Lady Evelyn Lake, Sucker Gut Lake and Willow Island Lake
I hope you are able to see Maple Mountain and the falls. The lakes, river and area is beautiful. Not to mention the scernery from the top of Maple Mountain.
Bill

A critical note: I would not suggest swimming down any of the falls on the North or South Channels of the Lady Evelyn River. You'll probably realize this yourself when you get there.

You can swim in the shoots at the bottom of Center Falls, though, depending upon water levels. Those are almost like natural water-slides (wear PFD's!)...

Good luck with the bugs during the first week of June. You probably won't see many people out there at that time.

Cobaltman,
Since I am not much of a fisherman I can not help you there.
As for garrett's post I agree but you can have alot of fun at the Otterslide.
If you want more info on the Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park, Hap Wilson's new book should be out in May and you will fine most if not all the info you need there. You can go to your nearest library and check out his old book and fine the info you need, also. Another item you need is the, Temagami Canoe Routes Planning Map put out by Ontario Parks. You can find it at almost any place that sells topo maps and while you are there pick up the topo's you need for your trip. Look in your local phone book in the yellow pages and look under Maps and you should find where you need to go to getthem.

Hey Cobalt Spider

I answered some of this in the Fish Ontario Forum for you where you posted some of the same questions.Perhaps you missed the reply! Hope you have fun on the Lady however I suspect from White Pine you'll spend most of your time on the Montreal River. I guess you'll see how funny the road to Maple Mountain question is to some of us Longtimers. A further note to Hillbilly , in the spring it is relatively easy to get a 16 foot boat with a 20 right to the base trail for Maple Mountain. Also I've had a 16 footer all the way to Fat Mans portage up the southbranch!Easily right into Chris Willis also. This spring I just returned and the water is the highest I've ever seen it. I even thought about running up Franks Falls!!! Well obviously it's not that high but close. Happy sailing if your so inclined.
