won't venture a guess since i'm stuck in southern ontario, but... going back to november this winter just seems very different from anything i have ever experienced in my 50+ years. combination of temps and lack of snow. as of 2 weeks ago my swamp near erin ont. was frozen solid; now the spring peepers are peaking, a month earlier than usual as was confirmed to me by a biologist from the credit valley conservation authority. not much mention of climate change in the corporate media though... never thought i'd see the day when the weather would become a taboo subject in canada- just imagine how this story would have played 20 or 30 years ago before global warming was made spuriously "controversial".

grncnu: I was out with my dog in Starkey Hills, near Arkell early last week. That is where Guelph gets some of it's drinking water, through artesian wells. The ponds in there were still partially frozen but ice-free around the borders and the spring peepers were going at it like crazy. Yesterday, I was speaking to a lady who lives on Kukagami Lake and has been there for at least 35 years. She expects to see the ice go out by the end of March. That is only 9 days from now. It does look as if it is going to cool off a bit this weekend and that may slow down the melt, but it is the earliest spring I have ever seen. |

People on Bear Island talk about one this early, maybe 1946 or thereabouts. |

Been tough getting the sat images with the recent clouds. But there are now plenty of low-level photos posted on the main website pages. |
